I think, as much as anything else, this movement to the right, as manifested by this vote and Brexit, is electorates in previously dominant western countries struggling to come to terms with the shifting sands of global economics. It simply isn't feasible or credible that Trump can resurrect once strong American industries, as much as Brexit can halt the tide of immigration into this country.
There are forces at work that no one can contain, but even so, you cannot entirely blame people for believing someone who says he's got a magic wand. People will believe anything if it presses the right buttons.
