OK let me spell it out simply for you.
When a President is elected by a minority of voters and there are frequent well attended protest marches by the majority then it gets noticed ( even though that won't be admitted) and this might put a brake on his more extreme policies. I say 'might' because there is no guarantee but demonstrations are an effective way of the people making their voice heard.
As for your 'straw man' argument maybe I did use an extreme example to make my case ( bit like the Donald actually), but my point is still valid about the value of the current protests in that they will be noticed and there is a chance ( no more no less) that they will serve as a restraint on his more extreme policies.
However if by conceding a little sideshow argument to you makes you feel better then I'm only too glad to increase your happiness and sense of well being.
