Slight tangent this, after flicking round tv channels I came across a religious channel titled Francis and friends. WOW VP Pence bows to the anti christ that is the Pope of Rome and Trump is being betrayed and American way of life trampled by dark forces

I think they can get another five or six more ‘moderate’ Republicans without too much effort due to the pressure they are now under from their various constituencies after the coup attempt.

Yes - Ted Cruz is in there and he has no spine so anything could happen with him. But beyond that the 48 is solid. Of the 52, that includes the 2 from Georgia who just lost theor seats - Mosow Mitch and others that have broken with Trump. Lots of reasons to not piss of the base but also if they do convict I think that piuts him out of contention for 2024 so that would work well for many and the party in general. In fact it could be the only opportunity to take him out.

I may have misread your post, but to confirm, Cruz voted ‘Not Guilty’ on both articles of impeachment, so would not be among the original 48 (Article I, which saw Romney become the only Republican that joined the Democrats) or 47 (Article II) that found Trump guilty in the first impeachment proceedings.
