Donald Trump

Agree. But it is pilling massive pressure on the party. They have a rift between the magas and the establishment GOP. This is driving a stake in to that divide and hammering it over and over.

Many old school GOP members/donors/voters see themselves as respectable members of the higher end of society. This is showing them the ugly truth of what Trump has done to the party. This will no doubt end in aquittal but not without implications and damage.
I agree. It's short term personal gain for most of them, and their short shortsightedness will bite them on the ass very hard. The GOP are in a mess if Trump is acquitted (and not much better off if he's convicted in all honesty), but Lindsey Graham had it right 4 years ago; "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed... and we will deserve it".

Its a strange one as I don't see Trump ever coming back from this. Can you imagine the attack adds if he were to run again. I just don't see any long term planning from the GOP.

Its all individuals looking at how they get through their next primary. Its a classic race to the bottom. In a primary you may have an incumbent GOP candidate who fears the MAGA nutter challenger - so he is forced to back Trump / defend the 6th insurrection to gain the Trump endorsement and win nomination. But the nutters (there will be many) will try to out maga the incumbents so you might get an establishment GOP senator back Trump now and still lose their spot to a redneck with more guns and a bigger flag. And at the end of it they try to get elected by the general public where in the next round in 2022 Trump wont be on the ticket. Looks like a death spiral - but maybe i underestimate the size of the maga demographic.

You only have to look at the likes of MTG who is a fully signed up Q-Anon bat sh*t crazy Trump loving MAGA who was shoehorned into a bombproof Republican district. MAGA isn't going away any time soon. The crazies have taken over the asylum, and I don't think the GOP have the power to stop them. Ultimately the end of the GOP in its current guise and MAGA will fade away eventually, but the collateral damage will affect US politics for many years to come.

Which is why you would think that more than 17 of them would think this is an opportunity to start to reverse the process now instead of letting it play out over x years.

If Trump is convicted then its as clean a break as you will get - very ugly and messy but it starts a fight back. If not then the GOP revolves around him until his death and then maybe his kids step up.

Don't discount the Senators who will do ANYTHING to p*ss off Democrat's just because they can.

Yes but that's too French and Catholic for these nativists steeped in the cultural heritage of Anglo-Saxon protestantism.

When we killed our King we used a noose. Steve Bannon is a big fan of hanging, drawing and quatering and heads on stakes.

Actually we cut his head off, assuming you're referring to Charles I, having convicted him of high treason.
