Yep. Whatever THEY want, or say they want, is either irrelevant or a lie. All that matters is what his voter/supporter cult wants. And make no mistake — plenty of House and Senate members, and especially those at the state party level are very much part of the cult. They don’t want to put him behind them. They’re going to use his imprimatur to consolidate his base to vote for them and keep them in power, just like the mid-level management of any cult does. They are either as insane or completely in on the grift. Those that claim they want this behind them want the trial in the rear view — not Trump himself. They want Trump 100 percent behind them — as in supporting their re-election campaigns.

He'll be the age Biden is now and a lot less healthy. Unless Biden does something weird or dies and his VP does then they should get a second term (still only Ford, Bush Snr and Trump in recent history that didn't). This would mean an 82 yr old Trump going for it and I can't see that. The biggest risk is maybe Biden dying in 1st term, the US electorate not being ready to elect a (black) woman (Harris) for the second, and GOP fielding another 'inspirational' populist. Don't know enough about the US to know if Obama has broken the mould enough for Harris to win in her own right, or if even GOP regard Trump as a dangerous experiment that's not worth repeating. I'd still hope that when the heat goes out of this over the next few years there are enough 'normal' republicans to drag the party back out the far right / populist rabbit hole.
