Train fare is 58 euro return and takes 2 hr 47 mins direct.

Where did you get that price?

The cheapest price I get without Bahn24 ticket (that is a frequent traveller card - with it starts at 58,50) is 78 EUR for the return ticket - caution as you cannot swap trains. The regular price would even be 128 EUR - so you have to get the cheap tickets as long they are available. (do not wait to travel day with booking it!)

<a class="postlink" href="http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/en?ld=9638&seqnr=1&ident=k7.02785438.1347212908&rt=1&rememberSortType=minDeparture&guiVCtrl_connection_detailsOut_select_C0-1=yes&selectOutwardJourney=yes&selectReturnMode=yes&guiVCtrl_connection_detailsOut_add_selection=yes&HWAI=JS!ajax=yes!&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2 ... ajax=yes!&</a>

Me, too - that is why I ask. The cheapest IC fares were all starting with 78 (ICE was more expansive but was not faster) for the return ticket (both in the German and Englisch language) and I looked at prices from about 9 a.m. to 17 p.m.

It only got cheaper when you booked with a Bahncard - that is a special frequent traveller card that gives you 25% off the price and would make it 58,50 EUR.

I looked into it again right now and some changed from 39 to 44 EUR from afternoon to evening.

Try googling German railways European special and following that link.

Not sure why different prices.

You get wrong prices when you take the wrong dates... I thought your match in Dortmund was earlier. Like this you still have the chance to get the tickets 20 EUR cheaper...

---------------------------------------

But - I found something interesting. It might be something for somebody that lives near London or gets there very cheap.

Outward journey Station/Stop Date Time Duration Changes Products
London St. Pancras International
Dortmund Hbf Tu, 04.12.2012 06:50
14:15 7:25 2 EST, ICE, RE
Return journey Station/Stop Date Time Duration Changes Products
Dortmund Hbf
London St. Pancras International We, 05.12.2012 09:52
16:03 6:11 2 IC, ICE, EST

That journey would cost 98 EUR (one way 49 EUR)

There is other possibilities - you even could start at about 11 a.m. and arrive at 18:00. The trains that leave earlier than 9:52 on Wednesday are more expensive.

Cracking deal for southern based blues. 7 hrs on Eurostar and ICE trains is no hardship.

That's a great deal. I'd have gone this way if I hadn't have already booked flights.

This site might be useful to anyone thinking of going.

It certainly is not.

Leave London at 6:50. Take a nap until you get to Bruxelles at 10:07. Switch trains (17 minutes transfer time) and get yourself a place in the bord bistro. Take breakfast and read a newspaper or chat with the bistro man or other people until you arrive at Cologne at 12:15. Spent your day in Cologne and go to Dortmund in the late afternoon (you could if you wanted as your ticket for the match is valid for the regional trains) - or get yourself something to eat from Mickey D's, KFC or whatever and some beer (you have 34 minutes transfer) and get into the regional train to Dortmund. Arrival at Dortmund at 14:15...

As much as I got to know British tradition travelling for football now the drinking can start...

Three of us went to the World Cup 2006. Stayed in Koln for EnglandvSweden, thought Koln was a fantastic city. Then went to Dortmund for BrazilvJapan, thought Dortmund was also good. Plenty of bars etc. Dont be put off staying in Dortmund.

Looking at booking flights to Cologne can get flights and 2 nights stay for £140 ish, I'm trying to figure out where the main bars and city centre is in Cologne, is it anywhere near the train station?

Want to book hotel within walking distance of where most blues will be drinking.
