Than go to Essen like described on the website. Sky train (for free) to the Düsseldorf airport station and further on to Essen...

Yes no problem, there are several ticket machines, but it is easier and clearly arranged at the Düsseldorf airport station and depending on the time a service center of the bundesbahn is opened. So take the sky train first and than buy the ticket at the station.
 
Anyone flying into Frankfurt hann airport tomorrow and do you know a good way to get to Dortmund was going to hire a car but sold out

Flying Stanstead to Cologne Tuesday am and staying in Dortmund,apologies if already covered but does the Kombiticket cover the trip from Cologne airport to Dortmund
yes, but not with the fast trains like IC ICE IEC IR, only with regional trains like RE, RB and such
