Dortmund

My favourite Dortmund memory was either the long shot that beat Gouw in the 1997 first leg, or Jurgen Kholer's block whilst already on the floor in the second leg from the French forward.

Dortmund's defence was incredible in the latter.

-- Thu Aug 30, 2012 11:44 pm --

Didnt we play them pre season not that long ago? Kolarovs first game i think.

Yes and lost 3-1.

It's a great place and a great stadium. The Sudtribune is special.

Yeah, we went; stayed in Dusseldorf. Drove there via the dover dunkirk ferry. Great journey and will be doing it again. For a car of 5 it works out about £40 each including fuel.

Dortmund team

Weidenfeller - Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer - Gündogan, Kehl - Götze , Reus, Großkreutz - Lewandowski

Subs; Langerak, Felipe Santana, Löwe, Owomoyela, Bittencourt, Blaszczykowski, Leitner, Perisic, Schieber, Sven Bender

There are NO scheduled flights between Manchester Airport and Dortmund's own airport.

For independent travellers, the best available alternatives by air from MANCHESTER are:
DUSSELDORF - Flights by Lufthansa and FlyBe
KOLN-BONN - Flights by Germanwings

Further away, but do-able if the others become too expensive:
FRANKFURT MAIN - Lufthansa
FRANKFURT HAHN - Ryanair

Public transport options by rail and coach within Germany are excellent. Dusseldorf, Koln-Bonn and Frankfurt Main all have their own railway stations; Hahn has a coach station offering excellent connections.

Ryanair also flies Manchester - Bremen. This is quite distant but the flight can be very cheap indeed. There are good rail connections down to the Ruhr. FlyBe operate Manchester - Hanover if you are really struggling to find anything! Another consideration is EasyJet Manchester - Amsterdam (can be very cheap) plus train to the Ruhr. They use those superfast ICE3 trains from Amsterdam as well - a nice experience.

For Dortmund fans traveling to the match at the Etihad Stadium: Manchester Airport also has its own railway station. Frequent trains to Manchester city centre (Piccadilly Station) take around 20 minutes. Day Ranger tickets valid after 09:30 which can be used on all trains in Greater Manchester are a good value alternative to single journey tickets.

Enjoy both matches, home and away!
