I stayed at Hotel Tryp for the friendly a couple of years ago. A brilliant atmosphere, but the best drinking places were next to the ground. I presume they can sell alcohol for Champions League games.
As for the City Centre most blues drank in Limericks Bar opposite the Railway Station. Friendly bar staff, but there wasn't anywhere else to go.

Limericks is OK but as the Xmas market is on there is only one place to be

Found a map of Dortmund city centre on the web page of a local hotel. (too big to put in on here, so there is just the link below )

Map shows at the top the central station (Hbf (Hauptbahnhof/DB)
The city centre below the station (with a street ring around)
Above that white piece with "Hotel Gildenhof" written in, you see the streets "Saarlandstraße" and "Kreuzstraße" (left of it) Around Kreuzstraße is a pub area where Dortmund fans have their beer before and after matches (and near the ground of course)
U stands for the local tube system
The Stadium (in the map named Westfalenstadion) is at the very bottom of the map (on the left)

For those coming with a car, here is a Autobahn map of the city
http://www.gildenhof.de/autobahn-e.html

A walk through a small part of Altstadt. The days of my youth, when i had some days at Uerige or Spiegel there, are too long ago, don´t know, how they look these days. At that days a street stopped the way to the Rhine (now in a tunnel)
Christmas market is in front of town hall

I can highly recommend you to visit some of the local breweries especially the below two:

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.uerige.de/en/start/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.uerige.de/en/start/</a>

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.fuechschen.de/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fuechschen.de/</a>

Both websites are available in english for the blues not fluent in German. *cough*

Both places are really popular and well worth a visit. can´t go wrong with good beer, food and some German "Gemütlichkeit"

What is the best airport to fly to from manc ?

Not sure you can fly Man to Dortmund direct you may need to change I think. Dusseldorf is approx 50 mins away on the train I believe, a number of city fans have taken this option. Lufthansa and Flybe do flights Man to Duss. After that there is Cologne/Bonn which is approx 2hours 50 by train from Dortmund with one change. Others are looking at flying to Amsterdam and getting the train through. There are lots of options and people seem to have plumped for the cheapest and best option for them. The transport links are really good in Germany.

I personally have gone for Man to Duss flights with Lufthansa flying out tea time Mon and back Thurs lunch with 3 nights in Duss. Those flights cost £106 with all taxes and backage allowance etc inc. This won't suit everyone as some want to go there and back in a couple of days.
