Dr Michael Mosley missing on Greek Island | Body found (p 9)

Autopsy inconclusive , bit weird that
They have now said he died of heat exhaustion. He took a wrong turn and left the correct path to the Marina. He was therefore climbing the hill over very rough and difficult terrain. He collapsed which was caught on CCTV yet found on his back some yards further down. They surmise he was trying to raise his legs in order to remain conscious.

So near to help yet so far.

Just come back from a holiday to Rhodes.... we went to Symi last Monday, two days before he went missing.

Obviously a little strange to see all the media attention for all the wrong reasons on somewhere we had just visited. We had a brilliant day there, stopping at St George's bay for a swim, and then spending a few hours in the main town (also called Symi).

Crazy how people can have such different experiences, a real tragedy for his family.

There’s a reason locals don’t go walkabout at the hottest time of the day.
40C is absolutely brutal.
I remember that TV programme a few years back when Levinson Wood (?) was walking the Nile and his companion/guide literally died of heatstroke on camera - there was nothing he could do to save him, it had gone too far.
Hard for us to understand in our climate :(

I have to confess to doing something similarly daft some years ago. Myself and the other half on our first full day in Vegas in 2013 decided to take a walk down the strip to some shopping mall. It was Labor Day so they had all kinds of offers on in the clothes shops there. It was mid-morning rather than midday/early afternoon so we possibly should be afforded some mitigation. Starting at the Bellagio and heading downtown on the strip, I think it turned out to be a 4km or so walk in what was around 37C-38C heat. At one point we had to stop at a McDonalds and grab some cold drinks we were that thirsty. We basically underestimated how hot it would be at that time of the day and with us being on the busy strip we didn't expect to get into too much bother. I think diving into the air-conditioned McDonalds and getting sprayed with cold water when walking past some of the hotels and shops saved us from something that could've been much more serious.

The son-in -law who's a rather adventurous type, enjoys a good walk, he decided to have a walkabout on Rhodes. Somewhere north of Pefkos, about 2 ish in the afternoon. He became totally lost and exhausted with the heat. It was a few years ago, he was in his early thirties and quite fit. Luckily for him, a local appeared along a dirt track in an open back truck. He couldn't understand why on earth he'd be in that location especially at that time of day. He gave him water and dropped him off back in Pefkos. That Greek sun is one of it's own. I'm off there on Thursday but I certainly won't be doing any walking, apart from going to the bar.

I did 4.5 mile run today in Crete, no way I could have done anymore. Totally different heat and air.
Ran at a slow pace but sweat was blinding me after a couple miles.
