Driving tour of Ireland

September might not be too bad but October will be miserable. But you can never tell. If it’s an Indian summer then the road to Dingle is spectacular. (Lovely beach on the way too - Inch)

And again if you have the weather, the ring of Kerry with Killarney as a base so you can walk up beyond Torc waterfall, around Mucross and Ross castles. All great days out if the weather is kind to ya. But it’s unlikely to be unfortunately - cos it’s evil. ( sure we can pray for a tad more global warming)
Second this. Go to Kerry, tis beautiful.
Edit PS. Met a beautiful redhead there when I was 18. Oh, my word.....

Said it to some friends from Hungary who visited for a long weekend last May and were surprised that we didn't leave the ring (they got the in depth tour :) ), if you really want to see the West Coast, you need at least a full week per county (I'd argue 2 in Kerry, 1 for the Iveragh and 1 for the Dingle peninsula).
yeah, I may well be trying to do too much in too little time. I thought we could get a taster and then come back to a particular place we like for a more leisurely stop. Btw, when did Irish hotels get expensive? I know its July but some of them are London prices! Some ordinary hotels in Galway for the racing week are well over £400 per night.

So, bit of a change of plan because our night in galway coincides with Galway races. As a result hotel beds are twice the price they normally are. Looking at an alternative stop that is interesting but isn’t consumed by the racing. Dingle is full. Westport looks nice. Any views?
Westport is a nice town, nice walk and views up croagh Patrick if your into that kind of thing, Molloy's has spontaneous, traditional Irish music and a popular pub owned by a former member of Planxty. I'd certainly stay there over Castlebar, but the drive between the two is nice.
Check out round stone in Galway, very picturesque town and anywhere in Connemara.

If your skipping Dingle Peninsula now and Galway is full, again Doolin is a good base in Clare as a lot to do and see around that area, especially if you have kids. Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Lahinch, Aillwee caves ( from father ted).

As another alternative some time in West Cork, maybe, Baltimore, The Beara peninsula in west cork is remote bit worth it but maybe not enough time.

so thanks for all your suggestions. Our plan so far is:

Ferry to Belfast on stenaline. Has anyone experience of the larne cairnryan route and especially p and o vs Stena?
First night in Kilkenny
Second in Cork
Then killarney
Then a night in a little place half way round ring of Kerry
Then looking for a night in Dingle or thereabouts - any specific suggestions welcome?
6th night in Galway - is Galway a one night stop or is it worth two do you think?
7 th carrick on Shannon. Mrs S has ancestors from round there

That’s it so far. Any further suggestions pubs and restaurants round that itinerary very welcome. Cheers in advance.
If your doing the 4 hour drive up to Stranraer/Larne route (90mins ferry), turn right and head along the Antrim coast towards Donegal and tour that way, pick up Giant's Causeway, Bushmills etc. en route.
If you're hitting Kilkenny for first night, Holyhead to Dublin is your route, you won't be killed driving then.
I know, driving tour, but still, it's about stopping off and seeing stuff.

BnBs are probably a better bet if your just putting the head down. Still can be expensive though.

The sea and beaches are pristine. Going out fishing and walking up the Slieve League.. Walking round Killybegs and having a Jar or dozen. Love it.
