Dropped points from winning positions

Sterling's movement, positioning and intelligence got him those goals.

That's why no other wide forward we've ever had scored that amount.
Sterling conserved alot of energy by not tracking back and doing the dirty work.
He was on the pitch at times just to get in at that back post

For me, I want the next wide forwards we buy to have a track record of getting at least 15 goals a season.
This.....but we also need these players to take a player on and cross the ball with their natural foot.
The inverted wide players we use have been figured out by other teams now and made our buildup so slow and predictible, so we need a more traditional way of attacking to play to our word class, centre forward's strengths.

I really worry about our away form. We’re comfortably the best team in the league at home, but we’ve taken 7 points less than Arsenal away. Knocked Liverpool and Chelsea out of the league cup at home, only to lose to Southampton away. Struggled to break down RB Leipzig away, despite absolutely dominating the first half. And you’d think with Haaland in the team, we’d actually be better away because he’s the perfect counter attack player. You’d think also that’d make us better after going a goal up, but it hasn’t worked out that way.

For sure. There are a number of warning signs flashing that make me feel a bit more worried for the rest of the season, and away form is another one. Certainly these two things taken together are where the rest of the season is won and lost now.

Everton and Forest are the two I look at and think there is no excuse, and chuck in the dodgy United call and/or not capitulating and all of a sudden we'd be sitting 2/5 points clear on top of the table.
Villa away was as bad if not worse
We also had nearly half an hour against Newcastle to get a winner, that we largely pissed away passing sideways and backwards when they were absolutely on the ropes

After another couples of games where we were 1-0 up and cruising only for us to end up in a disappointing draw or defeat I thought I'd check the stats.

We are currently joint 13 in the league for the dropped points from winning positions. Palace, Forest, Everton, Wolves, Bournemouth, Leeds and Leicester are the only teams with a worse points total.

We've dropped 11 points from winning positions this season, with 21 leads resulting in 16 wins, 4 draws, and 1 defeat.

For context, we dropped points in one game from a winning position last season. A single draw.

I knew we'd been poor for it this season, but it's really eye opening how much we are struggling to either kill a match off or manage a tight game.

Joint 13th maybe but Liverpool are 1st :)

I get the point you are making and it is a right pisser. But I'm not sure the context of last season is the right one to make - 21/22 was almost freakish with a W29 D1 L0 record from a winning position. Perhaps a more normal context context is our 20/21 champions season when we dropped 13 points from a winning position compared to 11 points this season to date.

Another thing, whilst we might be struggling to kill off games, we are getting into a winning position in the first place more often than the last couple of seasons - 88% 22/23, 84% 20/21 and 79% 21/22. Mentality monsters then :)

3 league goals is piss poor. That’s a CB’s tally.
It's the same tally as Bernie and Ilkay, one less than Alvarez and Kev and only two fewer than Mahrez. Coincidentally, it's also three more than any of our CBs as not a single defender apart from Joao has scored a league goal all season.

No need to single out Jack (yet again) for this as frankly the whole squad has struggled for goals apart from Erl (and Phil, at the start of the season).

It's been a weird part of our adaptation/transition process this season. For the last couple of years without a recognised striker, we could have six or seven players all getting around the 10 goal mark. This year, it's kinda been Erl or bust. Other players just haven't chipped in as much, due to the way we've been playing, and it's definitely hurt us.

I think a big part of the City fear factor in the past couple of years was the "anyone can score" idea, but now teams can focus on nullifying Erl and the other players simply aren't stepping up as much as they've done in the past.

Recently we've seen Jack and Mahrez getting some better numbers, so let's hope that can continue, as well as Phil coming back and maybe Bernie chipping in with a few more after breaking his long drought the other day. We need these players to contribute to kill off games and stop losing points needlessly, especially in this latter stage of the season.

Context maybe wrong word. But definitely illustrative of what was last season's great strength now being vulnerability. But let's hope we limit it to 13 points this season! Could well be that's where the title will be decided!

It is a strange one, I can think of a couple of reasons.
1) Phillips and Gomez the replacements for Fernandhino and Zinchenko have so far failed to fire. This has limited us tactically.
2) Because most teams park the bus against us then we have signed skilled wingers rather than speedsters. This means that if we do get a chance to counterattack because our opponents are chasing an equaliser that we are much less effective.

What can we do? Integrating Haaland properly is an option. Signing a couple of quick wingers another. Also, not conceding another, so a couple of solid defensive full backs another.
