Ebola Outbreak

You can't compare HIV to Ebola one takes years to cause enough problems to let something else kill you and is quite difficult to pass on. The other kills quickly and is passed in much more easily with a much lower viral load.

That's even before treatment.

(Although yes I agree HIV/aids does need to be in the public eye)

Why can you not compare them? They are both deadly viruses. One has infected 8000 people in 6 months and the other infects 5700 per day. Which one is the bigger danger?

There has never been a virus in history that humans can catch, that has mutated the way it infects. If that IS the case then surely with sensible steps we should be able to limit its progress in western societies?

I am really confused by the health warning messages coming out from central government.

Firstly they say Ebola is is not very contagious, it cannot be caught via airborne particles, there needs to be bodily fluid contacts for it to spread.

Then we learn a nurse may have contracted it by touching the skin on her face with an under glove she was wearing....

Next we learn the USA Government wants to track all 130 passengers that shared a plane with a passenger that was affected (and knew it) when she took the flight. I can understand why they might wish to do this but that to me says the virus is highly contagious....

Which is it?

why let her fly after treating an ebola victim? surely she should have been monitored for a week or two to make sure

it is if you come into physical contact with it, it doesn't take much bodily fluid contact at all, even inadvertently.

Totally agree... If it had been known, though it is said that she knew she was affected and she also knew that she should not travel. That aside, my question remains.... How easy is it to catch the disease we are definitely getting the message that says it is not very contagious, then the sub-message that illustrates it is very contagious.

So which is it?

I think the key thing here is to look to see how many people have become infected that interacted with the 2 nurses infected in America. As of yet there are no other people who have been infected by them.
Now the 2 nurses infected came into direct contact with someone they knew that had ebola and were showing symptoms.
You would presume that the partners of these nurses were subject to some physical contact. If they do not come down with the virus then it suggests that if you do not let someone sneeze all over you and practice good standards of hygiene, then you would be safe.
However I may be miles wide of the mark here.

Ergo it is quite contagious? Are they trying to manage the situation be preventing panic? I fully understand why they would want to do this.

I say quite contagious as opposed to not saying "not very contagious"
