Ebola Outbreak

i do remember a guy on TV when the bird flu was going on, and it is most definitely the way humans will be wiped off the face of the earth unless its by self destruction or a natural disaster, its just a case of when the right virus pops up under the correct circumstances , it turns out HIV was around before the Titanic sailed but yet only discovered in the 80s, the infection rate of it was so slow that no one noticed, Ebola is not the right one to see us off unless it mutates but there will be another at some point that will be

The source of the infection for the nurse that has contracted it in Texas is unknown. We know it has to be a fluid transmission. That could be the residue of a sneeze, a touch of the hand, or it could be direct physical contact with a bodily fluid that is not airborne or on a surface?

The best minds in medicine in the US are perplexed on transmission and it appears the only real "fix" they can hang their hat on is using the blood plasma of the original doctor who contracted Enola and then recovered. So far, he has donated a gallon of blood to help per victims, but they can only transfuse patients with the same blood type, so that "fix" is highly limited.

To be sure, I'm not particularly looking forward to flying 350 people to China tomorrow, but I'd definitely choose it over flying to Africa!

How about stopping all flighs in and out of Africa for the next 3 weeks??

It might seem harsh, but aa least I would stop it spreading to other continents

unless there is a world wide ban on crossing boarders it would be futile, for eg if we ban all incoming flights but france does not then they just come here via france, if an infected person goes to the states and coughs all over a guy who's coming to city v spurs he may be next to you at the game and no one would have any idea of the link to ebola

I said ealier in the thread that I don buy into the curen hysteria but that's not to say I'm not concened.

How about stopping all cross boarder travel as of now for 3 weeks(the incubation period)?

It is worrying that eventually an air borne virus for which there is no cure will develop.
I probably won't see it but obviously it's a worry for family and future generations.
Mankind will probably survive one way or another though.

that's the only certain way of keeping it out of the country, but no one comes in or goes out, the financial markets would have billions wiped off them and the economics of the country would be crippled, the country would in effect come to a stand still and be beyond recovery

One could argue that if Ebola go into the country then, never mind the econamy, humanity could be 'beyond recovery'

This was my concern earlier in the thread. At what point does the welfare and health of the people overtake the concern over economics?

The Ebola virus is invisibly small and needs the tiniest amount of fluid to survive in. For those of you who are wondering about this , touch your finger to lips and then touch the surface next to you. If you had Ebola, it could live there for several hours. And anyone who touched that place could catch it by picking their nose or brushing their hand across their mouth at any point during the next day probably - the slight perspiration of skin giving the virus new life.

Sounds extremely infectious (if not highly contagious) to me.

I thought exposure to UV light killed it??

correct but life is a gamble just like your life insurance 'your speculating if you do die and the insurance are speculating that you don't', the gamble with ebola is it wont cause as much damage as what the precautions of keeping it away would cause, unfortunately the world is about money and banks and financial markets not how many million will die, its very sad when you look at it that way
