Ederson (defensive midfielder Atalanta)

Some interesting points made. I watch a bit of Italian football and Ederson isn’t a truly stand out player, however we don’t need that at the moment. What we need is a tough midfielder who covers the ground quickly and can keep us a bit more steady. A player who is just as good running back as he is running forward (which is something we truly lack atm).

The Atlanta attack is fairly lethal, however they rarely get broken on as Ederson is the glue that holds it together.

He’s also not risk averse and can cut through the lines with his passing or dribbling.

We still have magicians to do the creative work.

Big yes from me.

A release clause means the club and player has agreed that the player could leave if a bid reaches or exceeds a certain fee. I doubt the club would act like children if the player would do what they have both agree he could do if a bigger club triggers it, making the club a big profit and the player a huge pay rise.
I'm guessing you don't know many Villa fans.

Nope, your facts are wrong. If you are injured you are out of the squad. If you sre on the bench and come in sometimes to add steel in midfield or cover at RB but aren't starting at your normal position you used to start in, that is the definition of being benched

He went down Gundogan took over and did it so well that when Dihno returned, he returned to the bench and never re assumed the 6 position. Gundo played it out.

I said nothing about whether Dihno played a huge part or not, so that's an irrelevant assertion. Obviously he did. Its not a denigration of Dihno rather it highlights peak Gundo and the value of such a player to a ream like ours

The point is to highlight the type of player that we need in light of how we play. A report likening Ederson to Gatusso makes me sigh

. Can someone please tell me who Gattuzzo would have benched in the treble winning side? I mean we know its not Rodri, so Bernado? Gundogan? Kev?

I too like those intense cover every blade tackling machine types. But i simply recognize its not what makes Man City tick. We are not Atletico Madrid. Some players who would be spectacular for them will be average for us.

To conclude, id pay double to have the best technical box to box CM over the best Gatuzzo type DM/CM.

That's just how o see it.
Gatuxzo, Gattuzzo, Gatusso, potato, potota, let’s call the whole thing off…

No. I just think differently sometimes. Sure, we dont currently have our superstar DM. But the reason why we suck (outside of general aging) is NOT because e don't have our DM. Rather its because we don't have our Superstar player who just happens to be a DM. We shouldn't confuse the 2. What we need is an infusion of superb talent in Central Midfield, not some specialized steel at the specific position our a superstar plays. Unless most forget, Rodri himself is no Nigel De Jong. e is just special at so many things put together and understands Pep's vision almost perfectly. Ederson is an inferior Bruno Guimaraes with far worse range and a bit more tackle in him. If you think what we need is a DM with steel, you have an unbelievable misunderstanding of what makes us tick. For those who have liked your post, let me explain, it is what we do in possession that is the key to our greatness. What we do out of possession is only secondary to that point, and really a failure in our possession csnnot be solved with more tackling. Our game for better or worse is predicated on our possession. The best players at doing that, are the best fits for us period!!! Some decent player who's a great tackler may improve us in the short run because of our ,aging core, but long-term and when our superstar returns will be a general detriment. We may potentially slow walking into the next Kalvin Phillips with the kind of thinking im seeing. Whoever we get should be able to play with or next to Rodri when he returns. A bonafide star. In my mind, its bot Rodri we are looking for, its Bernardo/Gundogan at their peak. What Ederson steikes me as ( and i could be off here) is a Brazilian Kalvin Phillips. And I'm simply not that excited about that I want the Dutch Gundo/Bernardo mix. People forget at his peak Gundo benched Fernandihno at the 6 position in a title run-in. Thats the vision of who i am puning for... A superb 8 who can play 6 in a pinch. But to each there own.
Balague pretty accurately echoed the BM consensus about our DM issue quite recently ..
"You know the game Jenga? When you take the wrong piece out, the whole tower collapses. That is what has happened here. It is normal for teams to have an over-reliance on one player if he is the best in the world in his position. And you cannot calculate the consequences of an injury that rules someone like Rodri out for the season.
City are a team, like many modern ones, in which the holding midfielder is a key element to the construction.
So, when you take Rodri out, it is difficult to hold it together. There were Plan Bs - John Stones, Manuel Akanji, even Nathan Ake - but injuries struck."

Your own analysis actually endorses this view but it is disguised as a contrary opinion in an extraordinary word soup.

I mean...

Is what you described not a stand out player?

Every top club needs one of these to function at the highest level imo.

Unless you associate the word more with not flashy or under the radar then I agree.
