Its funny that so many are convinced that the right thing to do is stick SWP back out on the right, and play Elano alongside Kompany in midfield. Me, I've had my moments of thinking like that. But the reality is I can accept we are actually more solid and more difficult to beat with SWP playing there and Vassel on the left. Which is what we needed to be after our soft defeats at Wigan, Boro, et al.

Weren't you critical of Hughes last week for playing SWP in the middle and Vass on the right against Hull instead of Elano in the middle and SWP on the right?

In my opinion, the rags would waltz through our midfield with Elano mincing around it. His position is playing more advanced where Ireland is, not sitting next to Kompany in central midfield. Unfortunately for him, Stevie is shitting on him at the moment, so it's the bench for him.

I'm not saying Vassell is the answer, but Elano in midfield with Rob, Ireland, and SWP in front of him, certainly isn't.

The problem is that if we play Elano, Robinho & SWP we end up being physically lightweight, surely the smallest team in the premiership?. They all tend to give the ball away a fair bit, usually by being shoved off it. Even when Elano & Robinho are working hard they struggle to win the ball back. We end up being bullied by the likes of Boro and Bolton.

There's a case for playing all 3 at COMS but not away from home. Although I admit the argument is less clear cut when the replacement for elano is Vassell.

Y'know its funny. Over at the swamp there are fans calling ferguscum deluded and calling for his head because he can't seem to incorporate Berbatov, Rooney, Ronaldo, and Tevez in the same starting XI.

I also remember Rijkaard being given a whole heap of shit last season for not being able to incorporate Ronaldinho, Henry, Messi, and Eto'o in the same starting XI.

Now I've read on this thread that Hughes needs to "man manage" him and make everything rosy. I disagree. Elano is not Robinho, Ireland, or SWP. He has nowhere near the same impact on the first team that those three do. So, I think Elano should be grateful to be at a club which is moving in absolutely the right direction (regardless of who the manager is).

Amazes me that people are prepared to forgive him the interview he gave in the week Hughes was off to see the good Sheikh. That is exactly the kind of mickey mouse instability which you would expect at a comedy club like Newcastle. There has to be a line which players don't cross when it comes to team selection, and the manager's authority. I like the fact that MH hasn't publicly bollocked Elano, and has simply said the matter has been dealt with.

Elano, again, after last week's game in Brazil was alluding to his inability to hold down a starting place at City. It's a shame, because you would think if he's as nice a guy as some are making out, he'd simply role out the "it's about the team, not about me" line. He could talk about it being a long season and the need for squad rotation.

Honestly, regardless of his talent, there needs to be a point at which the greater good is that of the entire squad and MCFC as a club - not the feelings of a single player who is upset that one of our homegrown kids has taken his place.

It's about timing. It's one thing to be making daft claims in the press during your summer break, but it's quite another to do it during the season, days before a game.

Am I to read into that then that you think what Elano did was fair enough? Let's put your feelings about Hughes aside for just one second.

If you read or hear what Elano said it was bascially this - "i don't know why i am not playing at the moment, i respect the manager but all i want to do is play for the team and make this club successful because i love it"

That to me is nothing bad at all, all he says is he wants to play, he doesn't slag Hughes off or the club, he just says he wants to play.

Fair enough if we have a player as good as Elano or better to play instead of him but when that player is Darius Vassell then all it is is Hughes cutting his nose off to spite his face and trying to stamp his authority on the squad in the wrong way.

Sorry... I'm sure you know your football, IP, but if you don't recognise that it wasn't what he said but where and when he said it that was the problem then of course you'll think that Hughes is cutting his nose off to spite his face. There was little reason for Elano to go on Sky Sports and question why he wasn't playing, other than to 'shit stir'.

Okay, let's for one second say that Elano's interview wasn't just a sneaky attempt to unsettle the manager or a selfish attempt to force Hughes to play him through what he thought would be overwhelming support from City fans. Then he is still guilty of being plain stupid and naive.

Either way you look at it, the lad has to learn that what he did is unacceptable and the only effective way you can do this is by sitting him out. Hughes, in my opinion, has come out of this whole affair in a better state than he went in. Elano definitely hasn't.

I questioned it, absolutely. I wasn't convinced SWP was effective enough going forward, playing through the middle. He proved me well and truly wrong on Saturday. Goes to show, you have to give players a little time to adapt to the way the manager wants them to play. He was superb there at the weekend, and looked totally comfortable.

You just said we beat Portsmouth because we had our best team out and then the same best team lose and you say no one played well.
