Elderly Drivers

im affraid insurance companys get the risk calculations correct, i have seen some dire driving from young males aged in the 17-21 bracket, the two strike's and your off the road in the first two years was the best thing that was brought in, the outside of my house bacame like a speed track for the youg boy racers it got that bad i stopped the kids playing out,the good thing is now it has stopped because the tossers have had there cars taken off them

Not me, but a Police officer that came into our school once.

Coming off the slip road onto the motorway, an elderly male stopped dead before going onto the motorway, causing the Police officer to slam his breaks on to avoid hitting the old man. A car smashed into the back of the Police officer's car, and this continuted into a 6 car pile-up. The old man then started up his car and went onto the motorway. They never found the old man, and the old man, to this day, has no idea what happened behind him.

Don't you have to re-take your license every two years when you pass 60, though?

As someone who drives a lot i have been noticing the actions of elderly drivers recently, and i have to say that the driving standards by some are shocking. My own Grandparents have had numerous incidents over the past few years and i really feel that when you get to 65-70, you should be forced to take a compulsory test every 2 years to ensure that their driving is up to standard. I was watching a program last night where an elderly 93 year old man was driving the wrong way down a snowy motorway, without stopping. When asked did he realise his actions, he said "yes but i didnt know where to turn around". So, what is your opinion on this subject? Should elderly drivers be forced to take a test every 2 years to check they are in a roadworthy condition?

i`d make all driver sit a compulsory driving test every 2 years. and anyone stopped without a driving licence, road tax, or insurance should be pulled forcefully from their vehicle and shot.

no if your doctor feels your fit you can carry on
we had to take the keys off my wifes mother and sell the car it was an old metro the other choice was to put sand in the rocker box to take it off the road, it had to be done

bold statement but i reckon being a little over zelaous when driving (ie mostly likely a teenager/younger driver) is LESS of a hazard to themselves and other road users than being overly cautious(ie the elderly drivers).

the elderly drivers are shite in two ways: firstly they have the attitude that theyll do want they want ie, back in my day we could take our time and that was fine. now that dosnt wash in todays society, you either drive at the 50mph in the 50mph zone rather than the ridiculous 20mph or dont drive at all.
secondly, their perceptions are so poor that they dont realise they are a hazard, and as posted earlier are often the ones who cause the accident without their vehicle actually being involved.

if insurance companies are going to put a premium on younger drivers then they should have the premiums for the elderly who are just as bad.

Some younger drivers should never, and i mean never,be given a licence.

There is good drivers and bad , whether 17 or 90.

Ask your teacher.

You can add Bus drivers to this list aswell, bunch of wankers who assume they have right of way all the time, pull up blocking the road and are generally a bunch of tw@ts

i drive a bus thanks a lot! the pulling up bit are called bus stops, personally would prefer to drive on but it kind of defeats the object of having buses

Simple law - if it's wearing a hat it'll drive like a twat!

Or in the case of Jewish women "If its wearing a wig it definetely isnt THE STIG"

I'm not being racist either, it's just a fact, they are some of the worst drivers on the road. I have to drive round Broughton, Crumpsall quite a lot.

-- Thu Mar 10, 2011 5:20 pm --

I used to work in car insurance a few years ago and we had some right characters insured at our branch of Swinton in Ancoats. There was an old west indian guy called Mr Costa must have been in his 80's. What a lovely old chap he was, really friendly guy and just such a proper old gentleman. He lived in Chorlton and would get the bus to our branch in Ancoats to pay for his premiums. He said he only used the car for shopping and didnt like driving across town!! So hardly ever used it.

Young drivers will become less of a problem over the coming years as insurance premiums go up. What we will see an increase in are uninsured drivers who simply cannot afford to run a car legally.
