elderly drivers

Doctors DO report to dvla. Took my mates licence off him after he had a funny turn. This meant he could not work as usual.

I saw a documentary about it fairly recently and yes the can but many are reluctant to do so because of patient/doctor confidentiality - they try and persuade them to self report in the majority of cases.

Given our ageing population and drivers being kept alive and active using meds I really do think its something that needs looking at....... of course that would mean looking at public transport provision etc and thats seen as political intervention and big govt something the Tories hate

Fun fact.

In the gov website they have data on the severity of crashes per age of driver.

You are more likely to be killed if hit by an older driver than a you get hit by a younger driver.
Do you have a link to that ? The only one I could find when you looked at the data it was just KSI but did not say who the parties were who were seriously injured or killed and who was at fault, but there was a report saying that frailty does have a part in the number of deaths/serious injuries being overstated. I.e If you’re old you can’t handle the same level of impact without sustaining serious injury as someone in their 20s or 30s.

We've had that experience with my father-in-law. GP very keen to palm it off to us to make a decision and notify DVLA, when we said we weren't qualified he huffed and puffed and we await a response weeks later meanwhile we cajole fil not to buy a new car!

Apart from the regular car I also drive a 5.5 tonne gross load motorhome - it’s not that big really, just over 6m long but pretty wide (about the same dimensions as a modern bin truck) but it’s classed as a private heavy goods vehicle and, while I’ve got a way to go yet, the law says that as soon as I get to 70 I’ll have to have an annual medical specifically to assess my fitness to drive it.
If and when they they tell me that I’m not fit to drive the motorhome I’ll also stop driving the car because IMO you can kill someone with a little vehicle just as easy as you can with a big one so if you ain’t fit to drive you ain’t fit to drive

After a quick scan on the internet I have come across numerous "studies" that show wildly different results on this topic.

Young male drivers account for 80% of young driver fatalities. Young male drivers are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed on the road than drivers aged 25 or over. One in five drivers of all ages were involved in a crash within the first year of driving.

Old drivers cause accidents , i live in a geriatric town and have been rammed twice and had to swerve several times , the old i mistook the accelarator for the brake excuse , really if you cant work two pedals in an automatic you shouldnt be driving !
