elderly drivers

I think the DVSA should bring in a yearly 20 to 30 minute driving assessment when a driver reaches 75. Not a full test but a driving examiner sat there to decide if the driver is still competent to drive.
What the correct frequency is I’m not sure but that would seem like a sensible idea, similar to what others posted earlier. I’m also of the opinion that people who are done for driving without due care and attention with a points tariff of 6 or more should also have a short driving competency test regardless of age.
The problem is there are insufficient qualified instructors to do it.

Good post mate.

Does your mum qualify for Ring And Ride service in Manchester and surrounding areas? My mum did but never used it when she could drive.
Having looked,GM ring and ride is for people who have difficulty accessing public transport or are disabled.
Neither qualifies currently for my mum, she planned ahead when moving to her current house:
Bus stops, railway station, local shops, health centre, post office, all within a reasonable distance.
And she walks a lot still, as her Doc says she’s very fit for an 83 year old after 3 hip replacements (one years ago - hit by a bicycle on the pavement as she stepped out of her drive).
Just her mental faculties is the issue, and old age worries about being ‘safe’ driving, not driving at night etc.

There was a post a few pages back about how they do it in Spain for the elderly every few years - computer simulation and response measurement, fail that=no license.
Seems sensible, but not for anyone who never bothered with a license…

The driving's OK in Spain, it's the parking that needs addressing. The dont park as such, it's called abandoning. They also practice the age old art of ' touch parking.....'
