Electric cars

Bloke down the road from me has one. Traded in an earlier electric model. Thinks he's the dog's bollocks and claims to be 'saving the world'.

It's a car. A quiet car. It cost him a fortune even after trade-in. The dealers must be pissing themselves laughing at the mugs buying them.

I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. As someone said before, they'll be out of date in a few years and replaced by something even 'greener'.

They're destined to be the Betamax of motor vehicles imo.
Before passing judgement drive one. I had same opinion until I drove a Tesla and my opinion instantly changed.

I don't think Electric cars will be the LONG LONG term future. I believe it'll be some other fuel. Was it Hydrogen or similar that's being looked at?

But for now they are the future, i find them interesting. I really like that little Honda E.

Had mine 20 Months now, luckily I can charge at home but rarely do as I can also charge at work, only do 8,000 miles a year but have done a few long journeys, had no issues at all. Had a Porsche Cayman GT before this so was a bit apprehensive about going electric , totally converted though doubt I would go back to petrol!

I "recharged" my diesel Dacia Duster today - 10 mins from getting out of the drivers seat to filling up and paying to get back into the drivers seat. That gave me 548 miles of range. Given that there is no comparable EV that would do 548 miles on one charge that would mean you'd need 2 charges - whats that ? 4 - 8 hours of your time to recharge the EV? Dunno about you I have places to be and people to see and I cannot manufacture an 8th day into my week that I can devote solely to charging.

How often do you need to drive 548 miles in a day though? If frequently, then I would agree that a petrol/diesel engine is a better bet. I suspect the majority of drivers do less than 100 miles a day and for those, an electric car could be a decent option.

I have a hybrid which is perfect for the mileage I do but I'd happily go with a fully electric vehicle. Charge overnight and I would have enough miles in the battery for 99.9% of my usage.

It means I "recharge" with diesel once a fortnight or perhaps more - I gain much more of my precious time - ie life - not charging my car with electricity. The car is already 9 years old - I'd probably be on my second set of batteries by now and they ain't cheap.

That is such a misleading statement. How many people can charge overnight? There are so many barriers to being able to do that. On C4News this week charging an EV was nearly as costly as filling a petrol car at current prices. If you are lucky enough to have the infrastructure at home to have a charge point installed its still £3.5K to put one in. I don't need a diesel pump and all the associated paraphernalia at home - I have 3 filling stations within 5 minutes of where I live.

EV's and the current infrastructure are just not the answer.

I charge my car at home and I wouldn't have an electric or plug-in hybrid if I couldn't charge at home or at work. I would think most EV owners are the same.

As I said, I have a hybrid and it's perfect for me. Each to their own but after having my current car, I wouldn't be keen on going back to 100% petrol/diesel. Electric or hybrid for me until something better comes along.

It cost me £850 to install my charge point.

Not sure why you have such a bee in your bonnet about EVs. Don't want one? Then don't get one.
