Electric cars

they will need to be enabled with a device that makes some sort of noise when they are on the road.

we are all customised to hearing traffic when out and about, especially people with vison disabilities.

I hope the green brigade think of this or many people will die.

They already do, or at least some do.

Green brigade? That just makes you sound like a child. And no, I don't have one.

lets just deal with them shall I?

I said the cheapest featured on the programme not the cheapest overall
as I said in my answer that was what my neighbour was quoted
if you live in shared or high rise housing you can't - how many people do you know who are charging off their drive and in the street? Would be interested to know.
I live up in Fife in Scotland and there's a few around here that charge in the street, there are flats with allocated parking bays a minutes walk away with at least one having a charge point located on the gable end of the building. Public charging points are rarer than home chargers here by a country mile.

We’ve had an electric MG for two years now and live about 5 miles outside Ayr. It is good to drive particularly into town and back, which is the majority of our driving. It has a range of around 158 miles in summer and 149 miles in winter.

Charging overnight at home for 4 hrs puts in about 100 miles and currently costs about £1.35p, so just under 1:4p per mile. My fixed price deal with Octopus ends at the end of January 2023 so it will undoubtedly go up when we renew our contract - the rate quoted today is 50% higher. Currently there are lots of free public chargers (with a£10 Charge card valid for 5 years) around Ayr including one about 10 minutes walk from where I live - similarly four hours charge will put in 100 miles for free. Naturally this won’t last.

The car after discounts and government grants at the time was £23K but the Scottish government offered an interest free loan for most of that. The interest free loan hasn’t benefitted us much so far with interest rates on our savings being so low but as they are now increasing it could possibly be worth £1,000 over the period of the loan. Was it/is it worth going electric with the higher price we paid than a petrol equivalent, I don‘t know but it is certainly cheaper to use now we have it than our non plug in Honda Jazz hybrid. The car came with a 7 year warrantee including the battery

There are three main downsides
*
We need to keep the Honda in case we need to drive back down to Cheshire, Surrey or Wiltshire in a hurry for family reasons;
*
The public charging network though free is very unreliable, not much of a problem for us as we are doing short journeys and can charge at home quite cheaply but would be a problem for someone doing daily long journeys;
*
The local, family owned garage that we bought it through has relinquished the MG franchise and the multifranchise group that have taken over are pretty poor to deal with.

Did I buy the car to save the planet - if I’m honest, no I bought it because it might be my last car before I give up driving due to my age and I wanted to see what an electric car was like, it was an indulgent decision. Do I like it? Oh yes!

Nice post mate..
MG are selling quite a lot of EV's over here. Quite a nice little SUV. I'm just not sure I could ever buy a fully Chinese car though.

That would be more of an issue for me now. We ordered it precovid and it took 10 months to be delivered because of covid. Now the political climate would put me off buying another Chinese car. However the Chinese company that produce MG also manufacture VW and now I think Audi so it can be difficult to know where things that you buy actually come from.
