It's very complicated.
Objectively, we are all much better off than we were in the 1960s. Even basic rate pensioners and penniless farmers.
OTOH, real wages have barely increased in a decade and people feel squeezed, not least by obscene housing costs.
I can't complain personally as I am quite well-off. But I can understand how many feel they are struggling against impossible odds.
