Elon Musk buys and ruins Twitter

Do you think Tommy Robinson could be released from prison and become PM in the next 15 years?
I don't think Tommy Robinson could be released from prison and become a functional human being in the next 15 years.

But this doesn't change the point that the recent history of geopolitics does seem to be that people scoff at the idea of right wing populist candidates becoming popular, who then become popular

Yes but only popular with a certain segment of society. The majority would never vote for these swivel-eyed extremists, any more than, back in the day, they voted for Mosley.

They voted for Trump, Le Pen, Wilders, etc. Hard right parties in Italy, Slovakia, Croatia, and Czechia have taken power and there's aren't "all Tories are racist" types, they're right wing nationalists. Actual hard right. Then there's surges of AfD, Swedish Democrats, etc not to discount our own homegrown Reform Party who are currently on about 30% popularity.
People need to stop burying their head in the sand about this. They aren't only slightly popular, they aren't going away, it can and will happen here too unless people start listening.

Facebook now joining X in the right wing disinformation gutter.

Meta is scrapping its third party fact-checking service in the US after nine years and replacing it with a "community notes" system, similar to the one used by X.

I have to sadly agree. I used to think the vast majority of the voting population in western countries were moderate folk who were quite happy for things to stay mostly as they are.

I don’t think that any more. People are agitating for change from all sides - and this is understandable, our world faces a lot of challenges. There’s a certain amount of political inertia built into our democracy. It is slow to change. When people don’t feel change happening they become increasingly frustrated and this pushes them to the margins. It’s become difficult to advocate for moderate approaches because we need radical solutions to big problems.

In an environment like this people will gravitate to those who have clarity of message - simple solutions to complex issues. The far right does this better than any other political segment, and if we think our population is too smart to be taken in by these platitudes then I think we have another thing coming.

The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself
Abba knew!

Seriously though

The threat is very very real. They smell blood and they're not going to stop unless they are stopped. They've plenty of time , a vast propaganda machine, perhaps some support in the forces and police, and a staggering ability to shape things in their favour.
Look at how things are now compared to say 2015. Things can change so much, beyond recognition.
Obviously people are yearning for change, everyone is, but I think the novelty of extreme authoritarianism will wear off very very quickly.
