Elon Musk

I’m firmly in his camp on twitter. He’s right about algorithms absolutely bringing out the worst in humanity. Explains muppets like Delaney and Castles getting any traction for example.
He’ll do fuck all to change Twitter, bar banning criticism of himself.

People follow Delaney and Castles as they post anti City stuff.

There are more non City supporters than City supporters.

City are successful, so everybody hates us.

Therefore it’s in their interests to post as much anti-City stuff as possible.

When Twitter ban you for violating their terms and conditions, it's a threat to free speech.

When SpaceX fires you for condemning the behaviour of it's founder, it's a consequence of free speech.

Let's face it, the so called freedom of speech debate is just one of many on a conveyer belt of red herrings.

Not really. Go badmouth your job online and see what happens.

SpaceX takes govt contracts and has massive national security risks. Those taking the jobs should know better. And if the way it’s run isn’t to their liking, they can apply to nasa or one of the many other aerospace companies.

I’m just finished a book on Bezos and a real takeaway was how freeing spacex felt to blue origin employees who moved from one to the other.

I’d say musk(and Bezos) are either great or horrible to work for and it will entirely be a split down the middle.

You either don’t understand the point or naively think algorithms don’t push the views to others. Twitter reach was organic until about 2016 and then algorithms were introduced and absolutely wreaked havoc. You can post something vanilla and twitter won’t move it. Say something extreme and once it gets any movement twitter will push it right out front for all to see. That’s a real problem and is why extremists are getting so much traction. Twitter is literally sourcing like minded opinions which leads to clusters of hate groups all across the spectrum.

So we need someone weird and extreme like Musk to sort it out?

I would Imagine he is very challenging to work for directly, but say you were an engineer on one of his space projects it's probably a great place .

Well that’s where I may agree with you.

We shouldn’t.

And having one single person do it is extremely worrying.

But it needs to be done and if he buys it and hands it off to a trust it would be a huge day for free speech and hopefully set a precedent for companies like meta to also follow suit or face an exodus.

Why would he do that if it caused a mass exodus? It’d literally be pouring money down the drain, whilst somewhere else, Twitter 2 is born.

Removing algorithms and improving the ability to speak freely without fear of shadow bans won’t cause a mass exodus, rather the opposite.

A mass exodus has already happened. Anyone with conservative views or not falling in line with twitter staffs version of trans rights or black lives matter have mostly left to other platforms. We’re not just talking about the cunts either, literally anyone who doesn’t agree with say trans competing in sports will see bans or reach of posts removed. That’s censorship.

So twitter right now is full of one side of most arguments and anyone who disagrees has ran to gab, truth or some other version.

Having like minded people in separate camps unable to openly discuss and debate is not the way for anyone to find common ground and it’s why it’s important that if musk takes it over he allows all sides to be evenly represented in all respectful discussions.

Twitter is just one great big echo chamber unless it's used properly for your business or interests. If you are the type of person who only wants to hear other people nodding at what you say then you are wearing the Emperors new clothes in real time.

Yep, but it wasn’t always that way and if it was it was down to curating a list of people you followed that was not diverse, so you’d have only yourself to blame. Unfortunately now algorithms have only served to make this happened constantly and prevent people from seeing diverse views. Musk claims this is why he wants to buy it. Let’s see how he follows through if the sale happens.

I mean that's simply not true. I only really use Twitter for work purposes, so I don't really follow any of the debates on there. Nevertheless, trans-critical and trans-supporting content occasionally gets retweeted by people I follow without consequence.

What you often find is that people who claim they've been banned for trans-critical content were actually banned for abusive content or harassment. And there are plenty of trans activists who have been banned for their behaviour. But naturally Twitter tends to clamp down harder on outright transphobia, rather than genuine debate, for the same reason they ban racist content. And they have quite a high bar for what's considered racist, homophobic or transphobic content. Plenty of things that people consider racist, homophobic or transphobic is still allowed. Look at every time City change their badge to rainbows for Pride month.

What Twitter likely do is operate a set of rules that ensures they get maximum engagement and basically maximum influence amongst serious people (they made a conscious decision early to become a news-sharing platform, by switching "What are you doing?" to "What's happening?"). They could of course be completely free speech purely relying on US law (which could be in breach of other countries' laws) but then you have a situation where no-one serious is going to use the platform. Allowing vast quantities of unfettered hate speech simply ensures that all other groups will stay away and it'll become an echo chamber for people who basically have no influence, like something like 4Chan.

A post starting with an assumption, no data to support it, leading to the ever-popular hyperbolic use of “anyone”, which therefore reaches a potentially erroneous conclusion and thus a likely erroneous prediction.

Would be my view.

Hey, did you ever stop to think that not very many people WANT diverse views and that maybe profit-seeking media makes more money by providing what more people want? And maybe more people don’t want trans-bashing cunts in their feed than do?

And those who really do want to learn about “all sides” of an issue go and do shit like research both sides, pursue data, etc. and don’t spend their time reading tweets but rather pore through primary documents penned by experts from sources willing to allow authors more than x number of characters?

Worth considering.

Well, I’m sure we can find an echo chamber of people who enjoy bitching about what an echo chamber Twitter has become somewhere. In fact, I know it.
