Encountering City players / staff in everyday life

Too many to mention. Ones I can recall.

My Dad gave Keith Macrae a lift home after the Sheff Utd away game in the mid-70s - may have been the Snake Pass Disaster game but Im not sure. Keith was a mate of my Dads mate hence the lift.

My mother-in-law used to date Coin Bell - she binned him as well. What might've been

Met Colin Viljoen and Kenny Clements in the late 70s; my Dad worked for British Caledonian back then and Clements was married to a BCal stewardess whilst Vijoen was knocking one off - another stewardess may I add, he wasn't stood there watching Ken and his wife.

Met Alex Williams many times. Used to live across the road from him and would also regularly see SWP sat on the wall outside in late 90s in the morning waiting for a lift to Platt Lane - SWPs legs didn't reach the floor either.

Used to play footy against Nicky Summerbee up to age 16; he never stood out but fair play to him for making a career out of it. Also used to play against Michael Brown's sunday team - Cheadle Royal - that he ran in the late 90s. We beat em in 2 Cup semis even when he flooded the team with ex-City youth players. He was a knob as well.

Played against West Hams Stuart Slater in the early 90s when he was playing for Kent Boys - he was brilliant, and I couldn't even get near enough to foul him. Later went to Celtic for a big fee as well. I played for Greater Manchester boys way back when and two of those players - Phil Whelan (Ipswich, Oxford, Boro) and Nicky Daws (Bury, Rotherham) made it as pros. Nick was City mad as well.

Once gave Paul Gascoigne a lift home after the Rangers v Celtic Cup semi in April 96 - top fella. Also met Mccoist, McCall and Iain Ferguson through contacts up in Glasgow. All top blokes though Ally does love himself a hell of a lot.

Met Mike Summerbee down on the Algarve in Portugal....just a very genuine , nice guy.

7th May 2000 Blackburn away.

Was fortunate enough to get a couple of Corporate tickets for the Blackburn Directors box.

Naive as hell, me and my mate turned up in our colours only to be turned away for not having a collar and tie.

Off to the Blackburn shop and no problem gaining entry in a formal shirt with a Blackburn logo on it and a Blackburn tie!!!!!!!

Sat next to Little and Large and that tiny Carl Foggarty.

After the first half hammering we could not contain ourselves in the second and were nearly thrown out.

Anyhow, after setting the scene,..... about 20 minutes after full time I desperately needed a piss and went off in search behind the box. Walking along a corridor and looked up and there was Joe Royle. I was nearly weeping and he just looked shell shocked. Grabbed his hand shaking it vigorously and just managed to get out "well done Joe".

Something I will never forget.

During the late 80's , probably 88, we played stoke away. My dad used to be able to get tickets for the Stoke directors box so off we went, think it was a Boxing Day game.
En route we stopped at that hotel on the M6 between junctions 15 and 16 for something to eat, had our scran and my dad being a big racing fan asked the receptionist if they had a TV any where, receptionist replied yes there was a TV room just across the corridor.
In we walked to be met by the site of the whole city team sat watching the racing in the room. They'd stopped at the hotel en route to the ground. Paul Stewart, White, Moulden, lakes, all of them! I nearly crumbled when Stewart , who was my absolute hero at the time, beckoned me over to sit in the spare seat next to him. Talking to me about racing, and the game, and where I was from. I don't think I managed one word in reply.

Got to the ground and into the seats to be sat next to Dave sexton who was the U21 manager at the time who went on to tell me tHat he was there. To see all the city lads and showed me all the notes he was taking.

Amazing day

Used to live a few doors down from Paul Simpson and Perry Suckling when they were in digs on Kingsway.

Bumped into Buzzer on Deansgate. He was on his way to M&S to get a butty. Saw him again in Gladbach at the U21 game this year. Robbie Savage was there as well.

Used to see the whole team with Bobby Manc on a Saturday morning having a walk down Deansgate before home games when they used to meet at the Hilton.

Saw Gary Owen pissed up in a bar in Barcelona near the stadium.

The missus got booted out of a taxi by Alex Williams because she wouldn't.

Howard Kendal lived round the corner when he was at Preston. Don't remember him as I was about 2 or 3 years old but my dad knew him.

Nearly crashed into Pellers in Hale. Would have been my fault.

Nearly got run over by a camouflage Bentley driving too fast down Barlow Moor Road. Realised afterwards it was Mario.

City staff eh? My brother is a City Tour guide, so if that counts, I see him loads of times.

Met Jack Dyson in a pub my mum worked at lunchtimes, (mare and foal, failsworth) 1985 ish. Had city tie on, he was selling drinking glasses I think. Asked about his tie, and said he'd done a bit for city. Spent ten top minutes telling me about his career, he also played for Lancashire cricket club. I still have his autograph and photo framed, when he bagged his goal in 56 cup final

Roy Cheetham's wife was a friend of the family so I saw Roy from time to time. Nice guy. Watched a City away game, that was on sky, when Reid was manager.... We lost!
