Energy companies and direct debits

I've just given Octupus meter reading for 1st time since early Jan and i've gone from being £365 in credit to £315 in debit.

How on earth have you used £680 in 40 odd days. You are on track for around £5k

I’m in credit by £1500 with BG, tried to reduce my DD which is £175pm but they didn’t reduce it, I have cancelled by DD and just pay them as and when my credit has gone

You are entitled to claim excess credit back but the energy companies argue that they should be allowed 2 months of payments in your account in case of customer payment problems. I would have put in a request to refund £1500 - £350 = £1150. It does depend on whether that £175pm is an accurate figure for avg monthly cost of usage though.
