England Squad - Euro 2024

Agree with a lot of that but Gallagher and TAA should be nowhere near a midfield spot. I’d prefer Mainoo before them. Gallagher was a disaster in the friendlies. He can’t play football. TAA glory balls it to the opposition all the time.

If Rice needs a ‘water carrier’ then a bit of blue tint but Lewis is ideal. Nothing fancy. Links the play and keeps it moving. That’s why I prefer Mainoo too.
Underestimating Rico a bit there, a lot more than a water carrier, he's got a really good eye for a quick through ball and isn't scared of it not coming off - Rice should be the water carrier for him!!

Contrary to the views on here i think its a mistake in not taking Rashford.

No problem with the young rag being selected either. Think you have to be pretty blinkered to not see a very good young footballer in him. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders aswell. No daft flashy haircut and designer gear and I don't think I've ever heard him speak! Definitely much happier to see Mainoo than Henderson or Phillips anyway.

I think Bellingham is that player, his half season playing upfront for Real Madrid has people convinced he is a forward. I see no reason why he can't sit with Rice in a double pivot. In fact I think thats his best position.
So do I.

He certainly has the engine to be a box-to-box midfielder, and I think he would be better deployed as such.

IMHO Southgate deployed every excuse from age to not playing in a certain position for City to not play him regularly.

But it's a nailed on prediction that he'll play Bellingham whatever the reason even though he chose the easy route by playing for the state owned Galactico's.

I don’t rate Mainoo. I think he’s been overhyped too much. That being said rico doesn’t deserve to be in the squad either. He’s barely started any games for us.
Agreed but if he’s going to pick a 19 year old, pick the one who doesn’t look out of place in a great team rather than the one who shines in a shit team.

It's hard to directly compare Bellingham and Foden but La Liga is widely regarded as an easier league and Foden's scored the same number of league goals, in more games, but also outscored Bellingham in the CL. Foden's the better player. But I don't think you have to sacrifice one of them. You sacrifice other things instead. Rice for example, he's better in a box to box role undoubtedly but he's not better than these two so he has to be sacrificed.

I've also got a suspicion we'll see Southgate copy Pep with a CB at LB to cover the space and enable a bit more freedom for Phil even if he is "off the left" and drifting centrally. Many games this season Gvardiol has been pretty much on his own on the left with no option but to pass inside or backwards. But we can still defend the situation if we lose the ball because of everyone else shifting over.

He's started 17, and come on in another 10. Pep clearly has rules about when he plays younger players, so his appearances were always going to tail off.

Every time I’ve seen him it seems his best position is lying prone in the floor looking at the ref.

I'm hopeful this tournament will be a breakthrough for Foden.

I think his main struggle has been that you can't be a 'cog' in this England team. He was so used to receiving the ball at City, and passing it back if the next move wasn't on, but instead of getting the ball again, his teammates would invariably try something themselves.

Now that he's taken on more responsibility at City, I suspect he's much more likely to be looking to make something happen, rather than play is safe.

Ideally, Real lose in the CL final, Brazil fail at the Copa. Foden scores a hat-trick in the final and wins the golden boot at the Euros. Ballon D'or in the bag.
