England Squad - Euro 2024

Henderson left out - great news.

Curtis Jones included - what the fuck?
Makes sense imo. All this excited talk of Rice, Bellingham and Foden starting in midfield is exactly why England couldn't win a major tournament with Gerrard and Lampard in midfield. Rice is a box-to-box, Bellingham is a false nine, Foden sort of plays in the channels. You can't have them all playing when there's nobody there stitching it together. Arteta understands that to get the best out of Rice you need someone like Jorginho or Partey there as a workhorse. France understood it in 98 when they had Deschamps and Petit carrying the load for Zidane. Ordinarily it would have been Phillips but considering he's a broken man now I was half expecting it to be Henderson. Jones might fit the bill. Could also do worse than having Conor Gallagher or Alexander-Arnold there as well.

Pickford
Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw
Gallagher/TAA, Rice
Saka/Palmer, Bellingham, Foden
Kane

Think there's a lot going for that team.

Rice is the workhorse ' get the best out of Rice' what on earth are you on about he's a cart horse who runs a lot wins headers and passes it to the lads with talent.

Apparently the following have all been called up to the provisional squad:

Trafford, D. Henderson, Guehi, Colwill, Wharton, Jones, Eze, Bowen

Not looking good for Jack IMO. Still think it'd be very harsh to leave him out, but Southgate was never a big fan to start with.

We'll see lots of players who have come through the England youth setup and some exciting options in there. Then they'll be cut out when the squad gets reduced to 26.

Grealish doesn't deserve to get in based on the form he's shown this season unfortunately. That's not great news for City, because I think he really needs to be in this squad for his own self-esteem. Missing out when he's also been a spare part this season for us is going to be a big thing to get over. Only takes an injury here or there for him to make it though. We'll see.

I don't think his form has been bad. He's just been unable to get a run of games due to injury. When he's played he's been pretty consistent IMO.

I do think he's a good player, but as an 8 he's not better than Foden and he's not better than Bellingham. The reason he has been playing TAA or someone like Henderson next to Rice is to give that balance, because Rice is not good enough to play the 6 on his own like Rodri is. For that reason i think he'll cart Foden out left again and probably play TAA in there alongside Rice. The annoyance really is that we should be playing both Bellingham and Foden next to each other as 8's and they should have had a run together to get some chemistry by now. But it's not gonna happen.

Has a similar G/A record to Rodri this season (7 goals, 10 assists to Rodri's 9 goals, 14 assists). Not as good as Rodri, which we know, but he's definitely still dangerous going forward and has turned up with some big goals for Arsenal this season in tight games (United at home, Luton away, Chelsea away) that kept City honest until the final day.

If you have someone like Jones, or Mainoo, or Alexander-Arnold, or Gallagher, or even Stones, sat in there basically doing the grunt work, it allows Foden, Bellingham, and Rice to shine where they do the most damage. It's exactly what Kovacic has brought to us this season, a deferential hard worker who stitches the entire operation together.

It's something a succession of England managers never understood throughout the 2000s despite all the talent they had on show. And Southgate playing a midfield three of Rice, Bellingham, and Foden will see us sent packing as soon as we come up against a decent side. The formation doesn't matter, someone just has to keep Rice company.

Although, another reason he needs someone sat alongside him for England is that he's not the best at playing the DM role on his own like Rodri, where he basically runs the game from behind the midfield. A lot of England's play was halted by his off-the-ball positioning at the World Cup, especially in that knockout game against France.

I still think England are a better team with Rice, Bellingham, and Foden in it but they can't all play together without a workhorse making sure they're allowed to shine. International football, significantly more than club football, is about making do with what you've got and someone is gonna have to make some sacrifices to make sure the team ticks.
