England Thread - 2023/24

Perfection is unattainable, even for Pep. Pep, however, is always looking to improve. With waistcoat, if Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble had been footballers, he would have chosen them. There appears to be no visible attempt to improve the style of play as new players emerge. Foden is the classic example. He is probably the most naturally gifted English player of the last 50 years (including Bellingham, Rooney and Gascoigne) and yet he cannot find a place in his starting eleven. Clueless.
The comment from waistcoat (and the press know-nowts) about booing Hendo the crab for heading to Saudi is all smoke and mirrors, Henerson gets booed because he's fucking shite

I tried to watch the friendly vs Oz on Friday but had to turn it off, very boring.

Ended up watching the Jimmy Savile programme instead.

I hope the fans boo Henderson again tonight. It's the only way the penny might drop with thicko Southgate that he shouldn't be anywhere near the national team.
It will just add to Southgate’s resolve to play him more. It will not benefit the player or the team, but Southgate can’t see past his nose. He will play him out of spite.

I dissagree, the idiot needs to understand that some of his decisions are not popular or the right ones.

Bellenderson will start, that's almost guaranteed. He's definitely Waistcoat's favourite, along with Slabhead.
Even to the detriment of the team those two will always be selected, over and above the more logical choices. We don't even have to wait to see the team sheet because we already have a very good idea of who the clueless-one will pick.
Slabhead will get in everybody's way trying to be a defender - and probably give away a penalty. It'll be hoofball from the keeper so we'll lose possession more often than not, and Henderson will complete every one of his passes...to the advertising hoardings.

And after yet another drab, flat, uninspiring 90-odd minutes Waistcoat will come out with the usual cliche's: "We weren't quite at the races, but we are making improvements," and football fans across the country will take to social media en-masse repeating the same hackneyed phrases they used the last time England played.

Southgate has a system that he plays and it's proving to be very successful as his record shows. Pep has a system, Klopp has a system, Arteta has a system etc etc.

What they do is buy players from other club who will be able to play in that system. Pep won't buy, for example, Jamie Vardy as he's a player who works in the counter and he simply wouldn't fit into our team no matter how good his form is. We wouldn't buy a tough-tackling midfielder as it wouldn't suit our style.

What Southgate has done, and few other managers have done, is copy a winning system from another English club manager. Maybe Venables and Hoddle had the nouse to do it. Southgate has copied Pep and the idea that the best form of defence is to keep the ball, the way to win a game is to keep the ball and the way to dictate the play is to keep the ball. As a result, he picks players who are good with the ball. It's no good being a top class defender at Crystal Palace if you can't pass it - you won't get Pep after you and you won't get Southgate calling you up either.

Anyway, this is why he picks Maguire, Phillips and Henderson - he trusts them and he knows that they can play his system. If we decided to pick players on form, the team is constantly changing.

It's all very well saying "we need a Bernardo or Gundogan", but they are exceptional players and at the national level, you can't buy them. So you have to pick a system to suit the players at your disposal. He's done it very, very well so far and brought a lot of harmony to the England set up.

The media didn’t take long to get the new Birmingham manager quoted on the back pages but what has Bellingham done wrong to get Rooneys support?

That’s all very well but if you don’t create chances you won’t win a trophy.

I'll always give Southgate lots of credit for lots of things. But one thing he's never been able to do is to get anything like the most out of what should be the best attack in world football perhaps along with France. I mean Kane/Saka/Foden/Bellingham backed up with Toney/Rashford/Grealish/Maddison is absolutely ridiculous. Not even the French can boast such riches. Yet his tactics are so negative and focused on not conceding which completely goes against where the main strengths in the team should lie.

Once the Euros is out the way and Southgate is gone, unless the stars align and there's someone special out there to appoint, I would give Lee Carsley a go. He's done great with the under 21's. Won the Euros with them and also plays positive, front foot football. In fact I think he's almost a certainty to get the job unless there's a Guardiola or a Klopp available which probably won't be the case if a new appointment will be made next summer.
