England v Ecuador

For me Barkley has to start. Playing in the World Cup you need someone special to open up defences & this guy has got it all.

I don't think Roy agrees, he has pretty much said Barkley is a media obsession.

Hodgson said: “He lost the ball an awful lot of times as well. If he's going to be the player we want him to be, he has to make better decisions of when he turns with the ball.

“I think Ross had some good moments. I think he needs to learn when he can turn with the ball and when he has to keep the ball. But that's quite normal for a player of his age. He'll be quite happy to have played so long on his first start.

“That's not a criticism, but there were other performances out there today who merited your ‘obsession’ more than Ross Barkley's.”

Asked to name who he thought played better than Barkley, Hodgson responded: “Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones were outstanding, Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park, Rickie Lambert scored a magnificent goal.

“There always seems to be an enormous obsession with one player. I will be prepared to start any of the players in any game, but I'm not prepared to address your obsession with Ross Barkley.”

I generally agree with him with the massive exception bolded above.

What match was he watching?

Sounds like we're in for an early exit then.

Supporters will not agree with Hodgson's assessment of Barkley but he is right even if he baffles me with his insistence of using Welbeck as a starter.

Even if Hodgson started with Barkley England will have problems during the World Cup.

Barkley was a constant threat against Ecuador. Yes he will loose the ball on occasions but he has the ability to turn defenders & get into dangerous areas. I can't believe the negativity from Hodgson.

Well we're not going to win it that's for sure but lets go out playing some attractive attacking football.

Ecuador are the weakest South American country in the World Cup and he didn't influence the game.

The blokes a tit. Barkley should start, especially with chamberlain being out. Italy will be a tight game and an explosive player like Barkley could make the difference.

Are you sure you were watching the same game.
