England wasting one of the most talented squads ever assembled on Southgate

He doesn't even like footy apparently

Obviously he just sees his club career as a job. Probably not arsed about playing for England because they donate the appearance fee.

I don't mind that, at least he's honest about it. Not much wrong with players just doing it for the money as long as they put the effort in for the fans who pay the money and the club that pays them.

Rumours that he asked not to be called up because of a supposed clash he had other a teammate at a previous camp (didn’t he come home from one/World Cup early?).

Remember after the City game when he went after Foden? Probably a lazy assumption.

Speak to any United fan or read any United media and they’ll tell you Maguire has been one of their best players this season. He’s completely returned to form and playing every week.

So what possible reason would Southgate have for not calling up one of Englands most reliable players of the last 8 years?

Especially with Branthwaite coming into the squad as a newbie competing for the same spot.

It’s just whining for the sake of whining. Theres nothing wrong with that squad, even if you’d have picked a very slightly different 23.
I agree with you about Maguire. He has been surprisingly good for that lot recently and probably deserves his place. Rashford has been bobbins all season and I struggle to see how makes the squad. The selection of Henderson is a complete mystery. Other than those two I actually think it’s a strong squad.

Ahh, rival players. Standard.

Not that reason for me, same players though.

To get the best out of Foden and Stones we need players who are patient and play a possession game. We probably won't ever get the best out of them because Southgate mixes them with more direct players, like Rashford (head down, run and shoot), who gives possession away.

Southgate should stick to just players who play in possession based teams OR bin them off and go for players who are at teams who play more direct and counter-attacking. Some players would maybe overlap both teams and subs could be used to change things towards the end of games.

So what would that mean?

Team A
Pickford
Walker
Stones
Dunk
Chilwell
Rice
Foden
Bellingham
Saka
Kane
Grealish

Team B
Pope
James
Maguire
Branthwaite
Shaw
Rice
Alexander-Arnold
Bellingham
Rashford
Bowen
Kane

Something like that anyway.

Edit. Basically City, Brighton, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs for team A, with Pickford in goal, or possibly even Trafford.

Team B for Liverpool, united, West Ham, Newcastle and others.

Maguire is fine when playing in a counter attacking side.

He's shite when asked to defend on the front foot and anticipate.

When the camera pans to both Southgate and Ten Bob, notice how they both wear the same deep thought look, like they are thinking on some other plane that we plebs could never comprehend?
The truth is neither have a clue what day of the week it is let alone what’s happening on the pitch. Head full of fucking magic both of em.
I always think that the 'furrowed' Southgate brow is an indication of him thinking 'WTF is this in front of me all about'?

Not injured now and Mainoo has started every game of late. Isn’t Gordon injured but he’s called up?
He’s missed most of the season. For me other than rashford at the moment he’s not better than the other attacking players.

I just don’t think Mainoo has played enough. It’s his first season and he’s getting overhyped in my opinion

Well Mainoo's pass completion rate was good against City at least.

He played 82 minutes and completed 12 passes out of 14.

Twelve passes in 82 minutes. How is that worth anything? I don't care about him sitting deep and occasionally intercepting and then attempting to break. That kind of crap won't see Phil get the ball ever in big games. We need players brave enough to try and dominate of to look to keep possession. I'd much rather see Lewis in there than Mainoo, at least we know he knows how to play the game.
