England's problem

In some ways, the blame can be placed on supporters. It's taken us City fans the last four successful years to learn all about the beautiful game where we see great players showing both unique talent and incredible work rate, yet even now we hear supporters shouting out for players to get stuck in, boot it up top, or bang it in from the wings for a big lump in the middle to muscle it in. If we want to play like Stoke then we should start supporting Stoke, but we won't win anything playing like Stoke. We City fans have been lucky, but other clubs without our resources do not have top quality flair players and so there supporters carry a neanderthal attitude around with them [like Stoke] because they know no different. As these clubs form the overwhelming majority of our leagues, then the majority of England supporters will be demanding there own neanderthal ideas of the game with them, and this will carry itself over onto the pitch, and the England team, whoever is selected, will just get carried away with the atmosphere that comes across from the stands. Until supporters become educated by studying great players, they will not advance enough, but as the authorities want to stop City from importing great talent, supporters will be robbed of this education and this neanderthalism will persist.

I'm afraid I still take the view that the presence of foreign players in English teams is not the issue. The issue is rather why do clubs have to look abroad in the first place? The answer is that the English Silva, Aguerro, even Kompany, is extremely rare (if he exists at all) and prohibitively expensive. For me it speaks volumes that City are increasingly fetching youngsters in from abroad. Are there no budding Colin Bells and Neil Youngs in Collyhurst and Hulme? If there are, why are City going to such enormous trouble and expense building international scouting arrangements when they could (as they used to do back in the glory days of Joe Mercer) just send a couple old players around the football pitches of Greater Manchester?

As for the comparison with Germany, I think the comparison with Scotland is more apposite. The Germans have a completely different set-up and a completely different social attitude. More communal, less individualistic for a start. Perhaps more to the point, the Germans employ far more qualified coaches at every level that we do. They are more professional, better organised, than we are. I'm pretty sure they have better youth facilities too, though I stand to be corrected. The English way is to muddle through and hope for the best. After all, it was good enough for me when I played in (insert appropriate year.) So it should be good enough for this lot. That's the prevailing attitude. Football is run by dinosaurs, and it's very hard to name a future English manager who won't be the same. Which is why (in my view) it's time to appoint some damned foreigner, perhaps even a German, and give him carte blanche.

It's Manchester City's fault dont yer' know

I'm sure that certain sections of the media will try to spin it that way.
The issue they will have though is the £200m academy that will open in the next few months.
Hopefully a few of the kids that eventually emerge from it will be English, although there is no guarantee
and even if they are we could be looking at 10-15 years before it has any significant impact on the national team.

Aren't we overhauling the nation's way of raising the footballing youth? Trying to emulate other, more successful countries? Perhaps we will see a general increase in the English talent pool in a couple of decades. And we all know that City's academy is likely gonna become a jewel of in Europe, never mind England.

This could go a long way to solving England's deep-rooted problems

I agree with the earlier posters regarding Terry and Cole, both of whom should have been selected if we wanted to have the best team. I am also still struggling to understand why Hodgson hasn't started with Barkley in either of the two matches. I think he could have made the difference.

I would like to see an England manager be brave and pick a squad of promising young players and leave the likes of Rooney, Gerrard at home.

All they are doing is playing for there your sponsorship deals...

We get beat and all the talk is about Rooney scoring his FIRST world cup goal, his celebration was not for the team it was for himself.

That is what is wrong with this nation, we idolise the shit.

mentioned it before, we were in the same position 10 years ago.
One point was, that the german FA and the Bundesliga clubs unite in solving the youth problem. Integrating immigrant kids was also helpful.
