Good question.
I always think of me being 5 and an inquisitive little fucker and then me now having a 5 year old me ask me why there is a statue to somebody i had learnt was a ****. I couldnt gloss it over and say he was a wonderful man, i would want to say the bloke was a ****. Then the 5 yr old me asks why does he have a statue then, and I couldnt answer it. Because I don't think statues of cunts should exist. We don't have statues to the Yorkshire Ripper, the Moors murderers and fucking hope we never have one of Tiny Tommy ten names. The statues don't have to be destroyed, they can be put in museums, that one in Bristol would fit perfectly in the slavery museum in Liverpool as it tells a story and the statue would add context and then it may even do some good and the 5 year old me might understand and the me know would be able to explain.
Its not because I would want to protect the 5 year old me from learning about cunts, because they would still exist in books, but statues celebrate they don't admonish. There is no statue I know of with an inscription that says "this man was a ****"
As for legacies rename them, we wouldn't want to open a Jimmy Saville wing of an hospital would we. But we could rename it the Marcus Rashford wing. Then maybe one day Marcus is a **** and then we name it something else. The Metalblue wing perhaps.
No i don't think beneficiaries should pay stuff back, they have done no wrong, just as I wouldn't expect people to give back there Jim'll fix it medals, because they have done nothing wrong either.
As for compensation, no, not for individuals, but as a nation we could make a difference and maybe repay some of the damage done the past. The covid vaccine for instance would go a long way to making a real difference to lives now and we could do that, rather than give individuals quid's because of some distant relative.
