Our government is generous with the benefit system we have in place including Universal Credit and our disabled brothers are more than cared for. I do not recall a time during this century or last century of there not being homeless people on the street regardless of governance. Do you ? We need to build more houses and offer assistance. 1. Its irrelevant to the point being made. The UK was not alone irrespective of any reasons why the commonwealth countries fought with us. The fact they did contribute to the Battle of Britain cannot be contested. Polond isn't and wasn't a member of the commonwealth last time I looked
2. I find dialogue with anyone that uses lol ultimately unrewarding

This debate does my head in. We cannot possibly live in or eat on our perceptions of our nation's history. You weren't alive then, you did nothing to contribute or shape things. So who gives a fuck who you think you are because you are British?

All I see is people creaming off nice stuff to support their ego, at the expense of making the massive efforts in serious study of history, and thus our politics, a useless endeavour. And that is a crime against ourselves and our parents and our children.

We really haven't done SHIT compared to any other generation. All of us bear that responsibility. Time to get our heads out of our personal British mythos. Just wait until the effect of COVID plays out in future years, we're guaranteed to be judged to have fared worse economically and with more deaths p/c and worse health than almost any other OECD nation, despite the vaccine push. And then they will start asking questions of us. Oh, I can't wait for the fun and games as people don't want to listen or take responsibility. Actually, I can. I can avoid it all, because I've seen it all my life, we're a bunch of excuse mongers who whip up drama to avoid the truth, that however hard life must be, we won't risk listening to reason in making it less awful. Not when the finger points at us. This won't be any different. We won't learn. We just never do. Proud and priggish.

So I'll just leave this here and go back to not paying attention to this shit show.

That’s the series I was referring to earlier in this thread. Only seen first one but well worth the watch.

There was definitely an air of superiority about the British at the time at least in the the “ruling” classes. And this persisted for many years after. So I do agree it is important to ensure people recognise the sacrifices made by everybody wherever they came from.

A little known story from WW2 regarding foreign RAF pilots (can't remember if they were polish or czech) and the local 'gentry' near one of their airbases is as follows:-

on the outskirts of their airbase was the local golf course, and a lot of the pilots would end up flying over it when returning from missions.
Base commander then receives a letter from members of the golf course complaining that these pilots are flying too low and 'ruining' their weekend game of golf.

Base commander takes it up with the pilots, who are rightly royally pissed off about it. Most are like 'wtf, we're trying to stop your country being invaded, and these muppets are complaining about a ruined game of golf.'

One pilot then takes things into his own hands, and on return from the next mission 'buzzes' the golf course numerous times, flying so low, that the golfers are taking avoiding action, literally jumping into bunkers or having to lie flat on the fairway etc.

One of the local 'gentry' decides he isn't going to put up with this, and is gonna stand his ground, which then causes it to turn into the ultimate game of 'chicken', with the pilot flying lower and lower every circuit.

Things literally come to a 'head', when the local 'gentry' guy gets decapitated by the planes wing.
Pilot gets full court martial and never flies again, and incident gets 'hushed' up for the sake of moral.
