English Histree

In my last 2 years I had to drop 2 from either french, german or typewriting.

I chose typewriting (only lad that did) mainly because I had no interest in the french and our german teacher was a pervert.

Glad I did though as when computers started to appear in my work years later no fucker could type very well or fast, so I had an advantage.
I was taught, or nigh on taught myself touch typing when I was at college, and because I could type basically without looking at the keys it was a given that when keyboards and monitors appeared together I was the complete afficionado. And so I finished my days as the school IT wallah without ever having two minutes training in the subject.

My understanding was the population when the normans arrived were mostly descendants from Northern Germans and Denmark, some Danes settled after the viking invasion too. I don't entirely understand what happened to the original English pre Anglo Saxons, maybe they were intermixed too, but I though a lot left.
Some left, but there wasn't a huge population swell into Wales.

There were stories that were passed down about the ‘Hen Ogledd’ (Old North, in Welsh) that showed there was some movement and that some Waleans had a history of living further North, but DNA tests are showing that a lot of Brythonic peoples stayed put and were just engulfed into what turned into England (Cymru and Cumbria are the same word in different Brythonic dialects!).

There was absolutely not a displacement of the population. And that even applies in areas that were part of Wessex Mercia and Northumbria as these areas are also showing that, while they do have a higher proportion of Angle Saxon Jute and Frisian DNA to other parts of the country, they also show a lot of Brythonic DNA (this could mean either or both of two things: one, the immigrants interbred with the indigenous population at the time; or, two, that they interbred with them generations later after living separately at first).

Historians/genealogists think the last great displacement of the population was when the Yamnaya migrated/rampaged across Europe 5,000 years ago.

I recently had one of those genetic tests done to determine where your genetic makeup is from.

If it's accurate, looks like my ancestors didn't travel much ha.
I’ll tell you what mate, that’s remarkable in this day and age. Especially if you live in a city.

Are you from countryside stock by any chance?

Maybe thats true.

Once I'm finished though I will still think that History = proper reflection of facts rather than 'my opinion is' ;-)

Where is that 18 year old Glendronach?

Might I suggest you retire with your malt and read this....

"The days from May 24 to May 28, 1940 altered the course of the history of this century, as the members of the British War Cabinet debated whether to negotiate with Hitler or to continue what became known as the Second World War. The decisive importance of these five days is the focus of John Lukacs’s magisterial new book.

Lukacs takes us hour by hour into the critical unfolding of events at 10 Downing Street, where Churchill and the members of his cabinet were painfully considering their war responsibilities. We see how the military disasters taking place on the Continent—particularly the plight of the nearly 400,000 British soldiers bottled up in Dunkirk—affected Churchill’s fragile political situation, for he had been prime minister only a fortnight and was regarded as impetuous and hotheaded even by many of his own party. Lukacs also investigates the mood of the British people, drawing on newspaper and Mass-Observation reports that show how the citizenry, though only partly informed about the dangers that faced them, nevertheless began to support Churchill’s determination to stand fast."

We may inherit our DNA from the Scots as I read that they have recently unearthed a stone village in the outer Hebrides that was older than the pyramids. I think they said it was 8/10 thousand years old.
Older than the pyramids is really worth thinking about and as we are supposed to go back originally to the Rift Valley in Africa it’s not even worth considering our DNA.
Archaeologists are finding more and more ancient remains going back further than they’ve found before.

Capitalism Is Bad ..repeat..Capitalism Is Bad ..ad nauseam .
Yes its killed more people than any other political system, so yes its bad, its corrupt and it exploits people
Our government is generous with the benefit system we have in place including Universal Credit and our disabled brothers are more than cared for. I do not recall a time during this century or last century of there not being homeless people on the street regardless of governance. Do you ? We need to build more houses and offer assistance. Calling Britain one of the most unequal nations on the planet is just your usual knee jerky reactions to the country you hate most. Sorry I meant despise.. my bad. I have no idea what you are waffling on about concerning Ireland?
Its a fact.

Yes, i despise what this country has become. I make zero apologies for that. I hate to see kids go hungry, I hate to see people sleeping in shop doorways, I hate to see the disabled treated appallingly, I hate to see the old choosing between eating and heating, I hate that the NHS is chronically underfunded, I hate that the education system is a joke, I hate the fact we are a country where racism is on the rise, I hate that cunts like you wrap yourself in a Union Flag and think all is rosy in this shithole.

If you became anymore cemented in your ways you would be in danger of becoming a statue yourself.
I would knock myself down, I am not cemented in my ways because the older I get the more left wing I get, because i am sick to fucking death of the shitbag RW cunts who run this country and their shitbag apologists.
Then you would would be in shit street getting toppled into a river to the leftie cry of What's that Rascal ever done for us.
No, just arrest the bad machines that are not functioning properly and lock them up. Its not difficult except for the fact we need to build some more prisons first.
Because prison is the answer, its the cunts who statues who are being toppled who should have been in prison.
Your like a recurring dream from Oliver Twist.

Are you comparing those feckless criminal statue swingers and smelly plaque removing oddballs to what happened at Peterloo. You need to research yourself some more Istory chap as your in danger of being acused of giddiness. No correlation whatsoever and the Peterloo Massacre was a dreadful affair:
You love a stereotype don't you. Here is one, you are a fool, who has bought into the RW culture war nonsense.
The world according to Rascal .. Mais Oui
At no point did the UK ever stand alone, try reading some history.
Glad you liked it
No, you can be funny. This wasn't, it was a diatribe of undiluted garbage that is symptomatic of why this country is a shithole.
Your a very naughty El Presidente for making hate speech against your beloved war time leader. A **** indeed.
You would make a smashing poet Laureat! I wandered lonely as a **** ...That's got legs..
Its Laureate.

Churchill was a racist ****. Didn't stop him being a great wartime leader, but he was a racist **** nonetheless

Thanks mate.

i must admit i like the period from about 400AD to 8 or 900AD, seems so mysterious. The Romans have fecked off, the Vikings get up to speed in the 800s. Did life just sort of.....plod on? i guess the Angles arrived? there are books, but not a great lot of detail is known, i guess that's why it is the dark ages

The social history of the that time is quite interesting, there is modern obsession these people lived in mud, squalor and fear and were worked to death in a feudal system, but, whilst the reality was far from what we consider comfortable, they apparently would have potentially worked less than us and actually had a very healthy life, extremely tied to the seasons and the climate. The Year 1000: What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium is quite interesting, as is another book in that vein describing household life in every month and the surprising things about women, work life etc that were completely rolled back and crushed during later centuries.
