I know a lot of us won't see our youth again, but today's teenagers are very lucky. "Horrible Histories" is a fantastic vehicle to get the youth motivated to study the subject. Mini Goldblatt was obsessed with it, as a 10 year old. She's now doing History at A Level. This programme was a MASSIVE part of her interest

I think it would depend on what language we would eventually end up speaking. If the vikings would have won would we now be part of Scandinavia??

You may jest, but study of history seems to be dominated by the twentieth century now judging by what my kids bring home. Tbf it seems to go vikings, Romans ww2. I think some of this may be a well meaning attempt to sidestep awkward or boring stuff, but if we were educated properly in our roots as the op described as well as our empire, slavery, etc then we may gain a more healthy form of patriotism as a nation. Nail - head. Kids now are taught within narrow parameters solely to meet curriculum requirements and pass an exam. I am an old fucker - we had free periods where we were allowed in the library for half an hour and subjects that piqued your interest could be studied in books. If you had an interest in say the Crimean war and there were relevant texts there you got them down and read them.

Kids have it all at their fingertips on line I hear you say. Yes they do but unsupervised they can follow links and end up gaming or listening to music in minutes. When you get a book out about the Crimean War or WW1 fighter planes or Peterloo there are no pages that take you to Betfair or drill music and thats the problem - they don't focus the mind enough,
