English Players

Who was the young midfielder at Derby we were linked with? He looked as if he might be worth taking a gamble on.

There are a few decent English youngsters but the majority are overhyped and overpriced.

so as EPL fans and citizens of GB, who is at fault for this?

The fees for English players is insanity. Literally, insane. Why is this happening? Of course if a kid comes up, plays well, gets a 30m pricetag slapped on him at 18, he will likely fail because he already has the weight of the world and the british media on his shoulders.

why does it seem to outsiders, that brit media sabotages its own players?

This is from a Crystal Palace fan in the general forum but gives an idea some of England's problems: No, but we are not even in the second tier of teams after that consisting of Argentina, France, Spain and especially for their size Holland. We may have a world cup over the Dutch European Championship, but they have challenged consistently for the trophies, whilst we have not.

I agree it is time to start building for the future, but we MUST, MUST make the world cup. I would perhaps start the rebuilding process then, but not risk failing to make the world cup. The biggest problem of the new generation is that we have a terrible defence.

As for our lack of guile this is not a problem with 4-4-2. This is a problem with the way we produce sportsmen. Across all the major sports I follow we tend to lack creativity and flair. Our rugby team even when we were the best, never had the flair or creativity of even the Welsh. This is something much, deeper than just playing a certain formation. Our coaching style seems to destroy creativity and individual flair.

Maybe Im overreacting because there's so many annoying "fake brits" in Canada... but it really does seem like they sabotage themselves.

What is the reason in doing that? Sell papers? Piss? Moan? You're a footballing nation, there's no reason to not want your country to excel. Yet your media says otherwise

(eta: I know fans wants england to win... just seems the media doesnt)

-- Thu Jul 11, 2013 4:27 pm --

Just testing :).

The problem with english football which very few other nations have to deal with is that before you consider "foreign" youth players being brought in there is already a youth squad consisting of 5 nationalities, England northern Ireland Ireland Scotland and Wales. No other nation has to deal with that. They all count as "home grown" but only a 5th can actually represent the country of the league they are in.

All these statistics of only 30% of players are English in the prem and how that is lower than other leagues I would like to know the stat for the % of British & irish.

Whose fault is it that the quality of domestic talent is poor? Wouldnt u look elsewhere of the quality is better and cheaper?

How many English players would improve us? Lampard Gerrard Cole terry all too old. Cahill baines Walcott welbeck cleverly jones we have better.

Rooney would improve our squad I do concede but no thanks.

Wilshere certainly if he over comes injury issues but arsenal wouldn't sell. They have no need. Plus we have one injury prone midfielder we hope to get right in Rodwell. Our squad can't afford two.

Ruddy would be a better no 2 keeper but has he gone Chelsea. In any case it wouldn't do his international career any good to play second fiddle at club level as well

So buy English. Great. But who the fuck is there with buying.

I don't think Clichy is better than Baines.

Do you think he is worth £22m to replace him. Baines is a good player I grant you. Better than clichy. Debateable. Worth spending the money to replace clichy. No chance. Clichy was £7m and is considered homegrown.
