English Players

English and German football is very similar, and what you have to take into account is, how many English players would get into Germanys squad? Only Hart and Rooney at a push, not starting XI though.

All countries seem to to through a transitional period. Spain, Holland, Germany and Italy did and they look set to be Europe top 4 national teams; even Belgium have appeared from no where. Every time England have a transition period, we come out of it WC quarter finalists at best.

Theres no goal scorers coming through and no great defenders. We have one good winger (Ox) and one good, but injury prone, midfielder (Wilshere).

Oh well City > England.

The problem with english football which very few other nations have to deal with is that before you consider "foreign" youth players being brought in there is already a youth squad consisting of 5 nationalities, England northern Ireland Ireland Scotland and Wales. No other nation has to deal with that. They all count as "home grown" but only a 5th can actually represent the country of the league they are in.

All these statistics of only 30% of players are English in the prem and how that is lower than other leagues I would like to know the stat for the % of British & irish.

Whose fault is it that the quality of domestic talent is poor? Wouldnt u look elsewhere of the quality is better and cheaper?

I have no problem with looking abroad im just saying we start from a poor position in terms of numbers due to the unique position we are in where 5 different nationalities count as home grown as all the nationalities come through the English system other nations dont have that. If Barcelona were English and had the same success with youth as they do now the youth players would be likely split across the 5 countries of great Britain and ireland as opposed to just the one nationality they produce now.

I cant think of a better way to explain it. Hope it makes sense

Wilshere has got to have a full injury free season under his belt in order to develop further.

It doesn't really explain it though, look at the relative populations:

England - 53m
Scotland - 5.3m
Wales - 3m
N.Ireland - 1.8m
Rep. of Ireland - 4.6m

So from an academy intake of say 20 UK youngsters, you'd expect around 16 English and 4 "others".

If the numbers are radically different to that the only conclusion to draw is that sufficiently talented English youngsters are either in short supply relative to other countries or the numbers are there but the grassroots coaching system is failing them.

How many English players would improve us? Lampard Gerrard Cole terry all too old. Cahill baines Walcott welbeck cleverly jones we have better.

Rooney would improve our squad I do concede but no thanks.

Wilshere certainly if he over comes injury issues but arsenal wouldn't sell. They have no need. Plus we have one injury prone midfielder we hope to get right in Rodwell. Our squad can't afford two.

Ruddy would be a better no 2 keeper but has he gone Chelsea. In any case it wouldn't do his international career any good to play second fiddle at club level as well

So buy English. Great. But who the fuck is there with buying.

I don't think Clichy is better than Baines.

Do you think he is worth £22m to replace him. Baines is a good player I grant you. Better than clichy. Debateable. Worth spending the money to replace clichy. No chance. Clichy was £7m and is considered homegrown.

I don't think it's worth 22m to pay for Baines, but Baines is better than Clichy and if we could have him at a good price that'll be great.

The only one realistic and good enough would be Shaw to replace Kolarov, but Danamy I think reckons Arsenal and Chelsea are at the front of the line for him. There's really not many other realistic options who are good enough for us. A Wilshere would be great but imagine the figures.

For me Shaw is the man, but he's just signed a new contract I assume to guarantee a huge transfer fee. I agree this lad will follow the well trodden path to Arsenal. We need to head hunt whoever at Southampton it is that keeps unearthing this talent. Whoever this scout is has an eye to spot a player at an early age, thats for sure.

Definitely a good idea.
