Enjoy your Napoli Trip

I posted this on the other thread...and think it is important enough to repost on this thread for those that missed it>

YOU AND YOUR MONEY
Ladies and gentleman in the words of Max Bygraves " I wanna tell you a story"
For those of you that haven't read the "Enjoy your Napoli Trip" thread" where I have posted extensive information I want to give you 1 last peice of advice concerning money.
The biggest single complaint I expect from City fans upon their return from this away day, is not "I was stabbed in the arse" but instead "What a fucking ripoff"

Restaurants are not a problem. You will be presented with a menu and you can scrutinise the bill at the end to check that you have only been charged for what you have had. If you don't like the prices don't eat there. What will you find on your restaurant bill?

For a start it is normal to find an item called coperta this is a cover charge and is usually 1.50 euros per seat. If they add 10% service charge then you simply don't tip. So no problems with restaurants hey!!!

Your problems start with bars and caffe's where it is usual to see no tariffs displayed. A friendly waiter will supply all your needs...you sit down and you are served. You don't pay as you drink, instead you are presented with a bill when you are ready to leave.

Let me give you a for instance. Caffe Gambrinus is a must visit caffe on the corner of Piazza Del Plebiscito. An awesome place inside and a great place to people watch. I walk in and go straight to the cashier and say "due caffe" (2 coffees). She rings the till and I pay 1.80 euros and get a ticket. I walk to the bar present my ticket perhaps placing 20 cents on top of the ticket as a tip.
I enjoy my coffee and observe the banter...highly entertaining stuff.

The next day I go to the same caffe but this time I sit outside or take a seat in the gorgeous sit down area and I am served by a waitress. " Due caffe" I say. The coffee is the same gorgeous stuff. I ask for the bill and along it comes...a whopping 13 euros.

Now I have made a warning to you in the main thread about the 3 tier pricing in Napoli. Neapolitans pay the right price...Italian tourists pay more...and foreign tourists even more. Trip advisor is full of complaints about rip offs. 1 English tourist observes " We had 2 coffees and 2 grappas in Gambrinus and we paid 50 euros, but it was worth it for the experience"....Is this guy sane?????

Now I'm going to give you the story of an Italian tourist from Florence who recounts his story at Caffe Del Professore" which is next door to Gambrinus. This is an actual account from from Tripadvisor and the translation is below.

il bar in questione si trova nel centro di Napoli; ho avuto l'occasione di provare il locale in questione proprio per uno spuntino veloce, risultato:

3 panini (che definire panini è un complimento, visto la misera farcitura e qualità)
3 bibite (fanta, coca, ecc)
2 caffè
1 sfogliatina/dolcetto

=
48,80 EURO

SCONSIGLIATO

The bar in question is located in the center of Naples, I had the chance to try the restaurant in question just for a quick snack, the result:

3 sandwiches (which is a compliment to define rolls, stuffing and saw the poor quality)
3 drinks (fanta, coke, etc.)
2 cups coffee
1 puff pastry / candy

=
48.80 EURO

ABSURD ..., given the quality of food .. if not a scam ... in the absence of price in almost all the menu items .. the presentation of the food left much to be desired and also the area, which despite being the center of Naples, is quite popular with the characters very likeable ...

RECOMMENDED

Now listen carefully boys...if you are going on the piss and there is a group of you, you can negotiate with the waiters. Ask him straight how much for a birra grande , if too expensive move onto the next bar... If you don't all we're gonna here on this site is how much you've all been ripped. THERE IS NO SHAME IN ASKING WHAT SOMETHING COSTS

Hi all,

i'm from the province of Napoli. I just want to say that Pete's description of Naples should be written on every Naples Touristic guide.. fantastic job mate, you should have been here really hundreds of times. thank you very much

I would just to add that Napoli is also well known for the tradiction of "Presepe", the "Nativity", City fans may enjoy a visity in Via San Gregorio Armeno, in the historical center.
This market is really lively especially in this period, until the epiphany.

Was at Stadio San Paolo last night. 0-0 draw but I thought Napoli shaded it. Got reconized by an Ultra called Gianni outside Mostra station and he bought me a beer. I was meeting a fellow Pompey fan called Jack who had told me he had bought a ticket for Curva A. I had arranged an escort for him as I was very scared he would be sussed out. I know an Ultra from the Spanish Quaters who told me via Facebook he would look after Jack but he couldn't get to the stadium till 7.
Jack was with another Italian so he told me not to worry. Got my video cam out to record Jack but was promptly told to put it away by the Ultras!!!! Later me and my cousins boyfriend made our way to a bar outside Curva B to meet Davide. I met him in Manchester and he said I must accompany him to Curva B next game.

Well had a great time...Curva B is home to 2 large groups, Fedayn and Ultras Napoli....everybody seems to know one another and is a real friendly atmosphere. Stood the whole game and was amazed at the continuous whiffs of spliffs coming my way...in fact it was offered to me but I politely declined. Great bunch of fans but was worried for Jack. Anyway he texted me during the game and said all was good and they were speaking to some fans and he was safe!!!

Later that night he wrote on my page:
"Shame about the result Pete, would have loved to have least seen a goal, but I put that down as one of the most wonderful experiences in my entire life! Next stop, City!"

There you go lads ...those that are going will def enjoy the football experience,
Davide warned my that from Monday.....do not go near the main station, do not talk English in town and be careful. He reiterated the Ultras are not the problem, and that Napoli fans had really enjoyed Manchester...but he said there are a few nutters that always want trouble.

weather update...yesterday and today very warm I'd say over 20 degrees. However once you get to late afternoon the temperature drops. So make sure you bring at least a jacket.

Those going independently....I had advised to those going independtly to do a circumference of the stadium to get to your gate...taking a route wide right of the stadium. This route has now been closed by a barrier running across the street at Curva B..So my new advice for those coming out of Campi Flegrei station(200yards to stadium)...... stay well left and keep going left...try not to walk to right of Mostra station(100 yards from stadium)...keep severley left at all times. If you exit Mostra station keep left lads keep left please....stay as far left from the stadium as you can....STAY SAFE

Flying to Rome tomorrow but heading straight to Naples. Thanks for all the advice Pete.

One last question though, where's the best place to get Cavani's signature pizza? :)

Poor Cavani he is carrying the burden of the team...so many goals last season and is indeed a great player with phenomenal workrate....but playing with an injury in Coppa America has left him alittle less sharp this season. Mazzari cannot afford to leave him out...a couple of weeks rest and he would be flying...but Napoli have such a small squad they won't rest him....For any club he would be a great signing!!
Cavaini is a dedicated pro and the President here said to Lavezzi you neeed to follow the lifestyle of Cavani who is a dedicated footballer, family man, christian, non drinker gambler etc....Lavezzi thinks bollocks...I am as good and I love whoring around!!!

Hi All,

We are staying at the Grand Europa near to the main train station as i had read there were a lot of blue fans staying there on earlier posts. But now I am a little concerned.

Is there a escorted service from the main train station or is it best to travel to the port.

If the port hows the best way to get there

Thanks Guys

Tickets for buses and metro can be bought in tobacconists, newsagents and railway stations and are the same ticket whatever mode of transport you decide to use. You can get the bus from the square head for Piazza Municipio, Piazza Plebiscito, Maschio Angioino, Stazione Marritime or the like...or the metro but you will have a 10-15 minute walk from Montesanto station. You should be ok in daylight hours but remain aware

Looking for a bit of help re booking the train tickets please.

We are on the 11:05 flight home from Rome so need to get a return train journey for 2 adults from Rome-Naples on the 22nd and Naples-Rome on the 23rd for the flight back at 11:05am.

Any help would be appriciated and possibly a beer for your trouble.

Cheers
