Eric Garcia - 2019/20 Performances

Despite what I've been told by a couple of others, Garcia has been making mistakes when he's played. He got out muscled in his own box yesterday in a situation which should have been easily dealt with and he gave Mane way too much space a couple of times against Liverpool.

But, most of us who were calling for him to start more before the lockdown knew he was going to make mistakes because it's all part of the learning process. Everyone who has worked with him whether on the pitch or in carrying out media duties will tell you he's a very, very bright young lad with his head fully screwed on. His potential is huge.

It's also worth pointing out that he stays on his feet and times his challenges well and he's already looking a bit more physical than before the lockdown. He's not about to grow a foot taller and he'll never have blistering pace but he's got a great sense of positioning. He just needs to keep concentration in the moment but he's still adjusting to the pace of the game. His passing is also nice and crisp.

Like I said months ago, keep playing him and have faith when he makes the kind of mistakes our experienced players have been making for years. He'll be so much better for it and so will we.

Good point about staying on his feet , he reads the game better than Stones or Otto and that is some statement for a 19 year old , with Barca sniffing around its time for a new contract for the lad , he's already proved his worth to the squad.

It would work better if it said "and I'm Eric too"

The way I read it was 'I'm Eric Laporte, and I'm Eric Garcia'. Works perfectly that way for me.

Either way, a lovely joke, and hopefully a partnership we see a lot more of.

Ah Ok, I thought "Aymeric (I'm Eric) and I'm Eric too!".

Agree that they look a fantastic partnership, especially with Rodri in front of them, who just gave Garcia some important support at times that I don't think Gundogan would have.

He for me is the reason I don't think we need to spend big money on Koulibaly. He'll make the odd mistake but so would Koulibaly, so would any CB including Laporte and VVD. Laporte made two howlers in the Champions League last season, shit happens but I trust the lad, he's got his head screwed on and doesn't seem fazed by anything.

Personally for me, the issue isn't that we don't have 2 top quality CBs, it's when we have 0. When Laporte's about and fit, he's reliably good enough so that whoever's next to him can form a strong partnership barring some calamitous fuckup. Similar to Van Dijk at Liverpool.

But take Laporte away and we have problems. Fernandinho isn't a CB. Stones and Otamendi aren't reliably consistent enough, and Garcia is a kid. Garcia may be good but he's not yet at the level where he can shore up a problematic defence single-handedly. In my opinion we need someone to be able to make our CB pairing strong.

It doesn't HAVE to be Koulibaly. But it has to be someone (I'm guessing your point is it can be someone but someone who is cheaper). If Laporte could stay fit an entire season it'd probably be a non-issue but the fact we need to be competitive in multiple tournaments means that it's a risky strategy.

He and Laporte made quite a few technical mistakes(bad clearences/misplaced passes in defense) against Southampton & Brighton.

The other important thing that most people don't take into consideration:
Does Garcia realistically want to be #2 behind a "world class" RCB for 3 years?
Especially when he feels ready & Barca keep calling?
