Its simple business. People who make the company money deserve to be rewarded with a good percentage of that money they generated. The football business is the players business. Without the players, nobody cares. It is their talent that generates the money.

Because eventually, they will put football clubs out of business, it is called biting the hand that feeds you.

Boys earning 20k, established players earning 150-400k the common working man who has dedicated himself to his craft since he was 16yo gets 30k a year if he is lucky, this person then has to pay more and more to watch the impoverished players ply their trade, sometimes twice a week and in some cases three times in a week.

I am not advocating that football goes back to pre-Jimmy Hill levels but obviously football at all levels can not afford to keep on paying through the nose.

If a big club like Barcelona are financially fucked it says a lot, but really it is the trickle effect to lower leagues, where these footballers are now on 1,2 5k a week and that really is unsustainable but the player still holds all the cards as they can see out their contract and walk to a club willing to pay the increase.

It has got to stop/slow down soon or even we will not be able to finance all the contracts for the star players we have never mind new signings looking at 350k or more.

Deserve is an interesting word. Although I tend to agree.

I'd rather it went to them - but I also think there's a strong case for providing more support for the others who are not as successful, and those without who the whole process would not work. There are things to be tweaked.

The idea however is that in focusing on 'overpaid' stars, the US style owners employ public opinion in their favour. Which is to not pay anyone a penny more than they can get away with. More for them.

I can't help but think of the farce of College Sports, 18-21 year olds turning out in front of hundreds of thousands, generating revenues from national broadcasts. And not a penny goes to them. The colleges and broadcasters and everyone else gets paid big time. But not them.

That is one alternate reality we should be very wary of.

Think of it another way. Let's say that you're a salesman for a ketchup company. This ketchup company has existed as a small family ran business out of a kitchen for the past 30 years. They sell a few hundred ketchup bottles a year. Now you come along and you are a superstar; in your first year you sell £2000m worth of ketchup to everybody in the world.
The owner of the company buys himself a new mansion, a Porsche, decks himself out in Italian designer suits, sends his kids on holiday to Dubai. He also invests in a massive factory to mass produce ketchup and a huge sales team to keep it all running, and he owns all of it. The assets belong to him.

Then he comes to you and gives you your £30k a year cheque. You made him a billionaire last year almost singlehandedly and he recognises that you did generate £2bn in sales. So he cuts you another cheque for £100k and tells you that you can now live comfortable for the rest of your life.

Do you know what I believe your response should be to that? It should be to go and tell him to fuck himself. He doesn't get to decide what is the "right standard of living" that you are "allowed". You are the one who earned the money, you are the one who generated the revenue and as such you are entitled to a decent share of that money regardless what he thinks your "proper place" in society is.

Excellent, I am not 50yo yet so I haven't, but 50 years ago players were hardly getting paid more than a normal working man, so I may cast a little doubt on your post timeline tbh.

My last post on the subject, no footballer is worth 1m a week in wages, even if that player was Messi, no matter what shite analogy about sauce people want to use that is my opinion and it won't change, in all honesty, there is no player worth paying a fraction of that fee but it is a pointless conversation now.
