It's been an issue as long as I can remember. Old Trafford in the 1960s and 1970s was notorious for early leavers. People would start to head out before the hour was up 'to beat the traffic'. Many were upset if United were not 3-0 up by then. But they still left early.

There was a sketch on Fantasy Football League in the 1990s where half the audience (wearing car coats) started to leave the studio half way through the show. In the film of Fever Pitch the father took Nick Hornby home with 20 minutes to go with the score, predictably, 1-0 to the Arsenal.

Sometimes, people do have perfectly valid reasons the leave early. I am sure that most of us have done it. However I remain surprised that the numbers particularly if the result is not settled. Can you image people leaving the theatre for an Agatha Christie play, ten minutes from the end, before Poirot or Miss Marple had revealed the murderer's name?

We also do most of the "real" aways. I never leave early from any weekend matches but night games I'm away 10mins from the end, in the vain hope to be home for 1am.

Don't underestimate how many long distance fans we have, there's more than you'd think.

Hopefully, for the early leaver police, a 200 mile round trip is a valid reason. If not, I would kindly ask you to fuck off.

Every time a small club plays away at a big club they sing those stupid songs.Leeds were singing them this week even though they were being totally drowned out by city fans. It’s pathetic.
