Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

We’ve got a lot of very devoted fans for whom a game is no longer an event but a ritual like church. On a game per game basis on a senior citizens discount theyre not paying so much, but at the other end of the scale high match day prices and the modern ticket buying process excludes large groups of young men and women who will sit together and make a noise which supports those individuals and families and mates who would get vocal and stay vocal if they didn’t feel alone in it. Plus you can’t take your beer in with you.

We are both scarred by the past and spoiled by the present in that we get anxious if we haven’t scored in ten minutes, at which point you will hear a nervous ‘c’mon City’! That said atmospheres are often best when we have to stage a comeback rather than grind out a win like yesterday when the score line flattered us. So I’d say there are factors that are about the game but also factors unique to us. There is no reason why we couldn’t have a whole stadium singalong to Blue Moon before and after every game to create a mood though, and not the Ricky Hatton version, but the way we used to croon it. We shouldn’t beat ourselves up though. City fans are the best.
Read a lot of posts about the atmosphere and this is the best I’ve read. Great summary of the situation and agree with the last sentences…

The level of song lyrics nowadays is also slightly pathetic. Take the new ‘Dias’ song. We rhyme ‘City’…. with ‘City’. Same as the new ‘Follow follow follow’ that rhymes with ‘world’? We’ve butchered old classics in light of new shite that is the most probable cause for a lack of atmosphere, on occasion. Perhaps if the songs themselves had a bit more heart and soul, a little more depth, and even a little more dignity - then maybe, just maybe, we can see the stands arise once more like they did on kippax street. Maybe we have this thread because we feel like we need to justify the constant Emptihad comments. I'm on a whatsapp group with mates and find myself constantly biting to Emptihad comments and also find myself looking for gaps at other grounds to say 'look we are not the only one'.

For the gaps in the stadium I've always liked to think this is down to us being a less touristy club. Especially around holiday times perhaps we are not so used to giving up our ticket on exchange so just let it sit empty. For cup matches it does annoy me when those in the media do it because what they are really doing is mocking working people who probably have shifts, children and financial reasons for not coming.

When we are at home I'm fairly quiet, not sure why, perhaps it is just because your in the same seat for 20 years so it becomes the norm. Perhaps it is because it is 'me time' away from the other stresses of life so I take it a bit easy, join in some songs, spend time watching the match and chatting to people I've sat with for 20 years now. Perhaps it is because mid to lower table teams park the bus a lot of times which we have historically taken a long time to break down so I'm a bit nervous for a large part of the match.

When I'm away I'm a bit of a mixture, normally loud but not always. Perhaps that's because I'm surrounded by lots of people singing or perhaps it's simply because I'm in a minority and feel more of a need to because of this. It's more of a day out, not the norm because the ground and location changes each week. Also there is something different being as close as we are in some away sections. I do find the further away I am from the pitch the less inclined I am to sing for ages.

The reality is pretty much all clubs are the same. Not all matches will be like the Derby. Brighton mocked the atmosphere, as we do at most grounds we visit. Some are worst, some are better. Some are just down to acoustic (or lack of) design. Very few are exceptionally different unless they have some conductor driving the crowd.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised more don't stay until the final whistle but I'm not judging or have any ill feelings towards those that do. In fairness most the people I see leave around me early tend to be those 65+ but I'd be surprised if that is the biggest cohort.

Perhaps the club could poll why and help do something about it where it makes sense.

I drive back 180 miles south if not getting the train, so from the green car park unless I leave 10 mins early it makes no real difference. In fact for Brighton at home I opted to take my son to the chippy after the match so it was slightly less annoying trying to get out given most the cars had gone.

If City poll and find the reason is transport then maybe they can look into it better if it would make a difference. Selfishly it takes me close to an hour to get from the stadium to the m6 after the match. Mainly all the congestion getting through Princess Road to the M56. Maybe they should look at better congestion control, perhaps they already do and this is the best we are going to get.

Admittedly I only watch other games on the box, but I'm never bowled over by any body else's atmosphere. It's not like other clubs have a rocking atmosphere for 90mins and we just sit there like dummies every match. I sometimes think we're a bit harsh on ourselves.
One thing we surely all agree on is the upbeat bluemoon.....its awful and needs reverting back, plus we play it too close to kick off! Play the original version and play it a few mins before KO and give us a chance to sing at least a couple of verses ffs!

Apart from the newly-promoted clubs who get giddy in their first year the atmosphere across the PL is much the same everywhere. You get the big matches where it can be fantastic but plenty of matches where it isn't. It was much the same in the 70s (apart from the big games) and especially the 80s but fans have very selective memories. On a good day the Etihad is as good as anywhere in this country at least. The worst period for atmosphere I have experienced was under Stuart Pearce.

On our good days we’re very very good, when you bare in mind we’re playing in a stadium that isn’t conducive for producing a good atmosphere. It’s easy in stadiums like Anfield or Elland Road when you’re on top of the pitch like they are, or we used to be at Maine Road, but in these modern arenas such as ours, the noise just doesn’t travel the same.

Think people need to wind their necks in a bit on this thread. We played Brighton and the atmosphere wasn’t great - big deal. It probably won’t be for Brentford or Fulham either, but we’ve been pretty good for the last year or so and for big matches we’re better than a lot of our rivals - the Liverpool fans last week were no better than okay for 75 minutes.
