Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

I'm not saying the style of support is either good or bad. I know it's very contentious amongst our fanbase. But if you have 5/10 mins, watch this video of the game last night and the fan engagement around the stadium in Dortmund.

The vlogger is sitting in the equivalent of ESL2 on the halfway line. Look at the demographic of fans there. Look how engaged they are, what they are wearing, and how noisy they are. That's what we lack. If people in all four stands participated more frequently, we would have a great atmosphere.

And before people talk about drums and types of songs, I don't mean that in isolation. I mean whistling, booing, shouting, clapping, waving scarves etc.

The only way that we can improve on that is to just do it. If you're in a quiet section of the ground, do your bit to make it more noisey. Until that happens there are always going to be debates about which musical instrument should be brought in to resolve our issues.

If we had a stand which was loud and vocal more people would be encouraged to join in when I was at a Barca game the ultras started a chant and it travelled throughout the entire stadium. Ultras do work English just hate being told what to do and are also much laid back so it definitely is a challenge to get a consistent atmosphere from any English side

I disagree with this. I think it's a loose stereotype. We like to think we don't, but we absolutely love being told what to do.

That's why we don't have ultras. Instead, we have nice, friendly, sit-down, and shut-up spectators.

There are loud fans who say "Don't bring a fucking drum" and everyone says "ok let's do exactly what that person said".

If we truly hated being told what to do we'd have people bringing drums in and being rowdier because we wouldn't care about what people said (e.g. don't bring drums, sit down, stop shouting so loud).

I think the reality is that we are creatures of habit, and we're stuck in the habit of being quiet supporters who arrive late and leave early.

We just have to start small and change the culture at the club. If we get 50 lads together who sing constantly and share the same vision of a better atmosphere, then that will grow to 500, then 5k. But getting 50 people together, who actually sings is really difficult with our fanbase. I've been trying to get that 50 together for some time and the reality is, we can't scale past 15 or so consistent people.

I hear what you're saying mate, but there's a reason Pep has stated he prefers the English stadium support, because its reactive to the game and reflects what's actually happening on the pitch.

Around the stadium last night, in the bars, in the square, the train station, we outsung them all night. No drums, no trumpets, no cheerleaders...just fucking singing.

There was no chance we'd outsing 80,000 Germans in that stadium last night, tried but failed. Everywhere else, won hands down.

Orchestrated songbook nonsense ain't for me, I'm afraid.

We just need to open our lungs and sing our fucking hearts out.

Absolutely mate, if everyone sings that's all you can ask

That yellow wall is insane and it must be brilliant to play in such a noisy atmosphere. Got to give to the Germans they know how to support their team properly.

It's impressive yes, and a sight to behold. But, away from the orchestrated stadium stuff, flat as a pancake outside. No bants, no comebacks from our songs, no fuck off home to Manchester...fuck all. Quiet as mice while we took the piss everywhere. THATS the difference...take the tannoy away, they're Bournemouth.

I think you’re missing the point. It’s about the atmosphere inside the stadium. No point giving it large and singing your heart out outside the ground when you’re quiet as a mouse inside. How does that help the team ?

I agree with the poster above. Surely it’s about singing inside the ground. Who really cares if we outsing them at the train station?

I'm with you. Ultimately in the big games we do step up. We could do with a bigger list of songs that everyone wants to join in on. We've got "Come on City", Hey Jude and Blue Moon that people will join in with - we're not really here as well. We've got Guardiola maybe as well. We could do with another anthem about our success that everyone will join in with. We're not going to ever have drums or megaphones and we don't need them.
