Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

The acoustics stops being a problem when the rest of the stadium join in but they won’t join in with the songs that the south stand sing. It’s a catch 22 which is solved in bigger matches when the south stand upper lead the singing.

As soon as I heard that “Follow follow follow” song a few games ago and I knew it would affect the atmosphere and it has.
Follow has 23 words

Blue moon has 19 words

Why do 4 more words preclude the rest of the ground from joining in ?

Again I think it’s an age thing -clapping along to a high tempo song is fun and the young lads will bang the seats and bang the back of the stand to create a rhythm but older fans might literally not have the energy to do that.

Blue moon on the other hand really isn’t that much fun to sing, it’s funereal

Oh you are talking out of your arse.
I have been going nearly 50 years as have the majority of my mates and we really give a shit and we make noise.
If you have any more baseless sweeping statements come and say them to our faces. We are in the Townley, sat by the side windows before most home games
We will probably be a bit pissed but still able to give you a bit of slap you gobby little ****

Becuase:

‘BLUUUUUEEEE MOOOOOOOON YOUUUU SAAW ME STANDIIIIIIIIN ALOOOOOOOOONE WITHOOOUT A DREEAM IIIIN MYYY HEEEEAAAARRT WITHOOUUT A LOOOVE OOOF MYYYY OOOOOOOOWN’
Arms in the air, belting it out, dead loud, quite slow, well known song (albeit a bit dreary sometimes when it’s not belted out properly and I doubt it’s even in my top ten favourite City songs to be honest)

And it’s not just Blue Moon, its:
‘CIIIIIIITYY CIIIIIIIIIIITY the best team in the land and all the world’ (there’s no better chant in football than that, I fucking love belting out ‘City’ in that song!)

‘WEEEEEEE’RE NOT REEAAALYYY EEEEREE, WEEEEEEEEE AAAAAAAARE NOT, we’re not really ere…’

and many others, the theme is - it has big belting out moments.

Whereas:

‘FollowfollowfolloowwevegotthebestfootballteamintheeewooorldwevegotRodriandGundoPhilandBenardoKevindeBruyneJohnstooooooones’
Clap clap clap clap, monotone bar the odd note (in the way we sing it, that is, it doesn’t have to be so monotone!), quite quiet, quite fast, new, people don’t know the words.

It was very noticeable at Wembley last season against Liverpool from my vantage point on the very back row of the top tier… our clap along songs didn’t get going in our end, our anthems did a bit more… up the other end Liverpool mainly sang anthems and everyone joined in, their two worst participated chants of the day were their two clap along songs (the Beatles one about Klopp and ‘oh I am a Liverpudlian’).

Dortmund are a good example this season in our two games with them n’all. They’re probably the most boring fans I’ve ever heard. Monotone, one-paced songs droning on and on non-stop to the same boring beat over and over… fucking dreadful!

Plus age has nowt to do with it. There are some old time grafters who are fitter and can jump around and clap to songs much more than many young fat bastards could. And there are more young fat lads these days than there’s ever been, probably in human history.

It isn’t about the lyrics, it’s just the way it is and always was, even back at Maine Road. The ordinary fans will sing the classic rousing songs but not the clappers. It’s the same at all other stadiums as far as I can see too. Arsenal, Spurs, United, Everton, Leeds…they haven’t got 20,000 fans going clap clap clap clap clap at 100mph. When they make noise they sing their club anthems. It seems that for some reason our most vocal fans have got into a habit of not singing the proper City songs and that’s the difference at the Etihad.last night made that even more obvious because there was no SS upper tier to take up the slack.

Can somebody explain to me what these clap, clap, clap songs are that are causing such offence. And causing fans not to sing. Thanks.
Because the rest of the ground don’t join in with them and they kill the atmosphere at key times when the whole crowd should and would be urging the team on.

If you don’t sit in the south stand it’s obvious.

No offence being caused by them.

They’re just awayday smaller away section chants (and they’re bloody great at away games… although could be about ‘City’ more!), but they’re not home stadium-wide chants.

They don’t carry around the stadium, they’re quiet so people can’t hear the words and many won’t know the words…

SSL1 have become detached from the rest of the stadium - away fans to one side, pitch below, cooperate section above, and the quietest stand in the stadium to the other side… SSL1 has become a mini-home stadium away section of its own singing the awayday away section suited chants.

This is so evident when you come on bluemoon after the match.

Every one in SS1 logs on and starts raving about how amazing the atmosphere was and how we outsang the Chavs

Everyone who sits in the rest of the ground logs on and starts moaning about how we were outsang by the Chavs.

No one in SS1 can complain about the rest of the ground joining in when all you can come up with is Follow follow and empty seats at home

So what chants do you expect the South Stand to sing for 90 minutes to get other stands and the whole stadium singing?

The chants are not different in nature to the chants in 111, 110 and 109 when most of our vocal support was there. I know because I used to stand in 110. I don't remember anyone complaining about the nature of those chants.

The South Stand start and sing a variety of chants. Some chants get the other stands and stadium joining in, other chants don't.

All you ever hear from the other stands is Come On City, Blue Moon, Best Team In The Land, Stand Up For The Champions.(started by the South Stand)

If anyone would like to post a list of chants they know the whole ground will sing without the South Stand starting them, feel free.

I'm not supporting the South Stand.

My Daughter sat in the Family Stand last night with her friend. She has a season ticket and sits in SSL2. Normally she struggles to hear SSL1 from SLL2, even though she sits in 212. She can always hear the away fans more in SSL3. Last night she said she could hear SSL1 clearly, and she was impressed by their support as a whole.
