Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

Fantastic pics, brought back some memories being taken there in the early 1960,s. It was a great day out but some of the animals were not kept in the best of environments . Very sad looking Elephants with chains around their feet and others like hippos in very small concrete baths. A great family day out though for many mancunians and it must have made some money in its heyday. Also great nights out in the 60,s seeing the Jackson 5,little Stevie Wonder and others in the ballroom there. Then there was the speedway a little further down . EEeee by gum, them were the days. { Hovis advert music plays in the back of my head}.

Wow how our view of animals has changed carnt see them chucking a baby in with the elephants, chimps pulling lepard tails and feeding hippos cake going down to well at chester zoo. .
Let alone bluemooners feeding the wolves fag ends ,and the rest mars bars .
Is it wrong to smile at these thoughts ?

As you say Belle Vue was a great place for a cheapish day out in the 60s for us kids. Reminds me of the time my mum took me and my cousin to the zoo, it would be around 1962 /3. As we stopped outside the chimps cage this arm shot out and whipped off my mum's glasses, me and my cousin were pissing ourselves laughing while my mum was screaming the place down. Once it decided that the glasses weren't edible the chimp kindly dropped them outside the cage, my mum swore she'd never set foot in a zoo again. And yes, Speedway on Saturday evenings watching Ivan Mauger, Soren Sjosten and Peter Collins - happy days.

Used to go quite regularly as me and my mate used to watch Belle Vue Aces in the 1960`s when they had some worldwide names such as Peter Collins and Ivan Maguer (spell) riding for them and then we would nip over for a couple of hours after the racing.
Must rate as one of the scariest rides ever that dipper. Not so much the ride but the fucking health and safety aspect as you always wondered if the fucking thing would crumble down whilst on it,with nuts and bolts missing, broken slats and fuck knows what else.H & S would have a field day nowadays !!
Still brings back great memories.

Was it still open in the early 80s?

I could have sworn my folks took me to Belle Vue and remember a few of the amusement arcades and my brother throwing his shoe in the elephants cage.

Nah, the zoo closed in 1977 and the amusement park in 1980.

I would have been six in 1980 so the amusement park was what I was mixing it up with.

Just remember a few arcades.
