As someone who lives there, and very much likes the place and its people, it is a description that is anachronistic and a soubriquet that is quite frankly, misleading.

Can you say that in English - or give me a parable to look up so I can understand it?
He means it's bollocks I think.

Thanks for that link fbloke, a very interesting article, and some clever politics from Manchester CC. With ADUG on their side they also have considerable access to funds, outside of government.

I read that today! Exciting times for our city. Some of you not in the construction game may not know but sky scrapers galore going up in next 3 years in town!

Any links regarding this?

I thought there was one going up next to the Mancunian way, but like most Skyscraper stories, nothing has happened.

I'd love a skyscraper filled skyline though, like Melbourne or Frankfurt.

And not Paris ;-)

The West Midlands region is enormous compared to Greater Manchester.

And why is this relevant? The West Midlands region includes not only the WM metropolitan county, but also Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The proper comparison is with the North West region, which includes Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria as well as GM and Merseyside.

The West Midlands county is not as big, but probably still 2x the size of Greater Manchester.

Probably twice as big? By what measure? By population, the difference is minimal - around 50K.

And by area, GM is actually bigger.

Source - <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_counties" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_counties</a>

I appreciate that linking to Wikipedia isn't ideal, but the ONS site doesn't contain lists, only zip files that you have to download. The Wiki page does contain accurate information based on the zip files, however.

The fact is that there's very little difference between GM and the WM in these terms. The single difference is that the area covered by Manchester City Council contains a population about half as big as that living within the jurisdiction of Birmingham City Council. To my mind, this is a historical accident that really counts for very little in the modern world.

Now, I don't have anything against Birmingham or its people. And I think 'Second City' debates are a bit of a waste of time - the big provincial cities IMO should work with one another to lobby for a less centralised system, rather than bothering themselves with trivialities like this.

But I have met several Brummies in my time who take the view that their city is much bigger and thus more important than Manchester. It's a fallacy in my book and it irritates me.

^^ Arguably detrimental to investment in the city too (I say arguably as it seems to be doing very well investment wise).
Going on the population within the 'city wall' makes Manchester appear as the Uk's 6/7th City in terms of size.
I think the 'Manchester City region' population is being more and more used and gives a more truthful account (again, similar to London City and it's various boroughs).

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

According to Wikipedia the West Midlands has a population of 2,738,100 and Greater Manchester 2,685,400 so not much in it but West Mids is marginally bigger.

One thing that did suprise me is West Yorkshire has a population of 2,227,400 so why do Leeds United with only Bradford and Huddersfield as rivals attract such poor gates with such a huge catchment area and little competition?.

Maybe because they've spent 11 years outside the top division, including 3 in the third tier.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

I think the fact that the Midlands has retained more of its old industry than Manchester and its environs has meant that its population didnt fall off quite so dramatically as that of Manchester.

However, Manchester had, and indeed still has, a more innovative outlook and one of investing in itself and its people.

The fact that the massive NEC has been more of a damp squib over recent decades but Manchester's much more limited Gmex has flourished and grown is indicative of the different approaches.

Manchester has rarely sat still and even under the Thatcher limitations the council found ways of generating funds for re-investment that other councils, notably Birmingham failed to use.

Manchester has for most of its history looked forward to tomorrow in a way few other cities have.

I'm rather proud of being from such a place.

Leeds still have a hard core of supporters but unfortunately no real money from its various owners to aspire to former glory.
Many W Yorks sports fans are also tempted by rugby which does particularly well this neck of the woods.

Incidentally, I have noticed quite a few City shirts among the younger generation when I pick up my my granddaughter from football practice. No MUFC ones and just a few LUFC ones.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

The debate about second City should be over. Manchester is racing ahead of Birmingham in so many areas. The status of the football clubs is an accurate reflwction of the status which the two cities are seen by investors.

For those interested in this type of thing - have a look at jrbs Sky scraper City manchester website!

Some major announcement at media city will be made next week! The city is doing very well at the moment.
