The academy just makes it possible, but we still have to produce the players. If that's all the criticism amounts to, what's the big deal. We know that don't we? It's like the Summer when Utd went out and spent £153 Million. You then have to get a return from those players.

The great thing from City's point of view is that this infrastructure is there forever. It gives us a platform to establish City as a top club for a generation - and not a flash in the pan as some will still be hoping. Some of that hope must surely be ebbing away now.

i was under the impression that Mcnair was the next Bobby Moore? ?

Based on the evidence of last night the corpse of Bobby Moore would have been more use than McNair. Anyway, back on topic.

It's legitimate to question whether the CFA graduates will get the chance in the first team as the bar has been raised so much higher than it was a few years ago under Royle, Keegan & Pearce and the stakes are greater. We weren't bothered about finishing top four back then or winning European trophies. Fewer academy graduates get into the first teams of the top clubs these days I'd guess and the ones that do usually need plenty of time to bed in.

Players like Sterling often make an immediate impact but then can fade over time as they're over-played, lose confidence or, like Sterling, they play in a system that affords them plenty of freedom and then that changes to one where they're carrying the burden. There is no magic system that turns academy graduates into first-team regulars and partly these kids have too much too soon and only the most dedicated stand a chance. But by having them close to the first team and playing in a prescribed way that will help them make the transition, then it does give them a very direct motivation.

PB just to clarify when you talk about sterling you are talking about a player that liverpool will have paid around £5 million for and not brought through their ranks as they would like you to believe .

Its been open for a day Marvin, one day. if in 5-10 years its not produced a player then have a moan but until then, sit back and enjoy our club having the greatest training facility in world sport and the benefit it will have on Manchester and its population.

That's true. He went to them from QPR just before he was 16 didn't he? But the point was that he came into the first team when he had Suarez and Sturridge to take the pressure off him. Without those two, he's struggling to cope.

Taking us out of the equation are there many academies who have produced many top class players? I can only really think of Southampton.Maybe we should have gone to their main men and paid them whatever it took for them to come here!

Even when we were not very good our famed academy only really produced Shaun Wright Phillips and Barton who made it in the premier league.Possibly you could add Joe and Micah to that.As average as we were the rest weren't even up to that level.

IMHO the finest academy taking everything into account has got to be Crewe under Dario .
Must have produced at least 6 full international s and a dozen good prem players.

I remember that group indeed i was at Maine Road when we beat the rags to win the youth cup. Aside from Hinchcliffe the rest faded away,Lakey would have made it to the very top if not for his injury.Yes Crewe had a great academy looking back.
