Was the East Stand at The Valley (Charlton Athletic) not bigger. Was the biggest ground in the country at one time

You have been reading WikiPedia.
The quote below was copied/pasted from Wiki.

The Valley was the largest football ground in the League, drawing crowds in excess of 70,000.[2] .Their record attendance was 75,031 - FA Cup - 1938 against Villa.-
- they forgot to mention " the biggest" after Maine Road, Manchester, home to Manchester City.
Could The Valley hold more than 75'031 ? Because looking at record attendances on Wikipedia, Charlton are only 8th on the list !

The "old" Valley was almost a three sided ground, the grandstand ran from the edge of the penalty to the other penalty area with some 40 mts left open at the sides, the seating being around 2500 to 3000, I only attended the "old Valley. once and the standing terraces were very steep compared to Maine road.
Another large terrace pre all seating was St Andrews, some good shots of the old terraces can be found on the Pathe section of youtube.

Im taking my Dad to his first game in about 5 years tomorrow and cant wait to walk around the ground and campus area to show him the changes. Can we go into the CFA area? Or is there anywhere with good views?

It's funny when people go on about "history" in football, and the lack of it with some clubs, ie us & Chelsea, Yet Maine Road must of been one of the most historical grounds in the country, with all it's records !

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

remeber my old man telling me once that Bradford Park Avenue could have the most people able to Watch a game due to it being in a valley !

Use to like the B P A colour scarfs

You're spot on: that 75,000 was pretty much spread over three sides. some nice photo's here of the big side terrace - looks much bigger than the kippax admittedly.

Apologies if these has already been discussed.
I recall earlier chats on Abu Dhabi investment spreading further afield than the Etihad Campus/Wider East Manchester area, and it looks like it's starting to happen:

Man City bosses pour £175m into Owens Park student campus

Abu-Dhabi-based Mubadala Development Company, run by Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, has put up the cash to redevelop the sprawling Owens Park site in Fallowfield.

Manchester City bosses are set to pump £175m into the transformation of The University of Manchester’s Fallowfield campus.

I think that this has always been the plan.

Why should the North of England wait for crumbs from London when it has its own Academy Developed investors with a proven pedigree offering to fund its projects.

Re: Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Threa

You have to hand it to our owners, the levels of investment and honestly the shear generousity they are showing with the money they are pouring into Manchester, well, it's quite breathtaking. "Thank-you" doesn't really cover it.

I once read that the Valley had attracted crowds up to 70000 but it had never been full so they didn't actually know how many it held.

I'm sure if Sheikh Mansour had bought Charlton in 2008 fans of clubs like Liverpool would have comically said they were a club "without history".

Their demise is fully merited.
