i bow to your superior knowledge but that makes no sense unless its going to be the biggest and best statium in world football, hope i am around to see it will be 68 by then.

A growing hunch. It only makes sense to people who value prestige just as highly at the incredible cash resources they have.

Not only is the stadium starting to fall behind new developments and building concepts (capacities) it's also becoming increasingly expensive to work with what we have.

Estimates put the cost of the South Stand addition at £80m.

Another £200m will be needed to just make the planned extensions.

I'll caveat it, the present footprint of the stadium may alter drastically, grabbing a lot from the existing surrounding land.

I believe we will be playing in a new stadium by 2030, and regardless of the recent upgrades, planned developments.

I sense an ongoing dissatisfaction it is not a sufficient centrepiece for the wider plans.

Both in terms of other planned stadia and the costs involved to get it to where they want it to be for the next generation.

How will that work? If We build on a new site what will happen to the Etihad thats council owned, will they let us knock it down?

Not a scooby. The stadium could be turned 360 degrees? West Ham did something at Upton Park and Spurs are being very clever by building on the back of White Hart Lane.

Not so much a new site, but a stadium that we can continue playing in at the same time as the new structure knits to it?

They want the biggest stadium in Britain.

North Stand snippet - I understand contracts for interior work (don't know about the rest) have been signed...

My friend who works in the construction game just back from working abroad and his contacts have told him the North Stand expansion will begin once the glass tunnel work is complete, at the moment unable to begin the ground work and footings due to the players having to use the service tunnel which will be effected when work begins.

But this must have already been reviewed prior to the South stand expansion and we opted to expand what we have.

Discosteve's comment seemed to be related to expansion of the North Stand in which case that makes talk of a new ground even more unlikely.

The cost of extending the North Stand to give us 62k, is bound to be a fraction the cost of building a 60k plus stadium from scratch. And what would happen to the Etihad? I can see that this might have been an option at one time, but seems unlikely now.

Perhaps it will be a "triggers broom" type thing. Upgrade/replace the current one until it's up to scratch.

As people have said it wouldn't make sense to spend £150m on extending North and South stands only to move 13 years later.

But there was talk earlier in this thread about plans to remove the cablenet, and if that's gone, with all 4 stands upgraded, they'd presumably have lots of options to makeover the exterior. The difference could be huge, take the bernabeu for example -
